Faculty Onboarding

Your First Month

Your first month is about settling in, connecting with your team, and exploring campus life.

Required Tasks

As you continue to learn the ropes, take this time to explore campus, engage with your colleagues, and dive deeper into your role. Remember, this is your journey—embrace each moment and discover what it means to be part of the Maverick community!

All new employees must complete compliance training to understand key institutional policies, procedures, and federal and state regulations. This training is essential for ensuring that your faculty and staff are well-informed and equipped to uphold the standards of a state institution like UTA as we strive to be a leading urban research university. Your knowledge and adherence to these laws, policies, and regulations are vital to our collective success.

Important Details:

  • Compliance training must be completed within 30 days of your start date and renewed annually.
  • You will receive an email when your training is ready, usually 1-2 weeks after your start date. This email will provide the deadline for completing the training.
  • Look out for an email from the Compliance Training Coordinator or access training directly through the link below:

University Compliance Services (UCS) is tasked with helping our Maverick Community maintain a culture of compliance throughout UTA. Because of that commitment, we would like to share with you two important resources that will help you maintain a high level of ethics and integrity.

In accordance with Texas law, all benefits-eligible employees are automatically enrolled in the Teachers Retirement System of Texas (TRS) upon hire. To be considered benefits-eligible, you must work at least 20 hours per week for a minimum of 4.5 months. Note that students employed in positions that require student status are excluded from this requirement.

Mandatory Retirement Plan:

All UTA employees are automatically enrolled into the TRS retirement. There is a mandatory 8.5% retirement deduction on each paycheck.

UTA provides a range of tools and resources to help you maximize your retirement benefits. For more information on retirement programs and resources, click below:

Benefits Eligibility:

  • Full Time Employment:  Employees are eligible for benefits as a full-time employee, the first day of employment if:
    • You work at least 40 hours per week or have a full-time appointment,
    • Your appointment is expected to continue for at least 4.5 months,
    • You are eligible to participate in TRS or ORP, and
    • You are not currently insured by another state-sponsored medical insurance plan.
  • Part-Time Employment: Employees are eligible for benefits as a part-time employee, the first day of employment if:
    • You work at least 20 hours but less than 40 hours per week, or at least a 50% appointment,
    • Your appointment is expected to continue for at least 4.5 months,
    • You are eligible to participate in TRS or ORP, and
    • You are not currently insured by another state-sponsored medical insurance plan.

New Employee Benefits Coverage Options:

  • Option 1:  Coverage can start on your first day of active employment. Note that monthly premiums are not prorated; you'll need to pay for the full month of coverage, regardless of your start date. Your first paycheck may not reflect the benefits premium deductions due to payroll processing, but any missed premiums will be deducted from your second paycheck.
  • Option 2:  Coverage can begin on the first of the month following your start date. To choose this option, please contact Benefits Services.

Benefits Deadlines:

You have 31 days from your hire date to complete your benefits enrollment. If you're transitioning from a non-benefits eligible status to a benefits-eligible status, you also have 31 days from your change of status to enroll. Please note that enrolling in certain insurance coverages may require proof of insurability or dependent documentation.

If you miss the 31-day enrollment window, you'll need to wait until the next Annual Enrollment period or a qualified change of status event to make changes, including adding or dropping coverage. Annual Enrollment takes place from July 15 to July 31 each year.
