How to Know If You Are an Advanced Standing Student

Do you have a Bachelor of Social Work degree from a CSWE-accredited university that is less than 6 years old?

If you have answered yes, then when you apply to the Master of Social Work program you will be classified as an Advanced Standing student, and will begin the program in the Specialty Year.

If you did not respond yes to the question, please explore our Foundation Year page to see if you are eligible for our 2-Year Program.

What is The Foundation Year

What You Can Expect in Your Specialty Year (Second Year)

During your Specialty Year as a Master of Social Work student, you will learn specific skills in different practice areas of Social Work and receive a custom degree plan for your chosen Specialty. Social Work is a large field and many Social Workers work in a variety of settings from gerontology to children and more, so your chosen Specialty does not mean that is the only Social Work setting you can work in. The School of Social Work offers four micro-concentration specialties that focus on helping individuals and families, and one macro-concentration specialty designed to support and make change at the community level.

Specialties For You to Choose From:

The School of Social Work offers five different Advanced Standing MSW Specialties. Students will select one specialty to pursue during their second year.
