Emerging Mavericks The Emerging Mavericks program underscores UTA's proactive approach to addressing societal challenges that impact student success. By investing in initiatives that support vulnerable student populations, UTA not only enhances individual outcomes but also contributes to the broader community by fostering educated, resilient, and empowered graduates. This program serves as a model for how academic institutions can implement targeted support systems to address the diverse needs of their student body, ultimately promoting equity and inclusion within higher education.
The Emerging Mavericks program at UTA is designed to support students transitioning from foster care or those facing homelessness by offering a comprehensive network of services tailored to their unique circumstances.
Our purpose is to:
• Provide Stable Housing: Offer temporary on-campus accommodations to ensure students have a secure place to live, enabling them to concentrate on their studies without the stress of housing insecurity.
• Deliver Academic Support: Connect students with tutoring, academic advising, and other educational resources to promote academic achievement and progression toward graduation.
• Offer Mentorship and Advocacy: Assign dedicated program managers who advocate for students' needs, assist in navigating university systems, and provide guidance on personal and professional development.
• Facilitate Community Integration: Encourage participation in campus activities and organizations to help students build supportive networks and fully engage in the university experience. At The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), we are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by students who have aged out of the foster care system or experienced homelessness, the Emerging Mavericks program was established to provide essential resources and mentorship. By addressing critical needs such as housing instability, academic support, and personal development, Emerging Mavericks empowers students to focus on their education and future aspirations, embodying UTA's dedication to student success and well-being.
