Notes from Amol Naik
I am currently working as a Senior Dimensional Engineer at Tesla, Inc. Living in Fremont, California. I am from South-West India, and I graduated from UTA in 2017 after completing my MS in Industrial Engineering.
What is your greatest professional accomplishment?
I am fortunate enough to work on some of the coolest cars in the automotive world. Currently I work on Tesla's model S and model X. Prior to Tesla, I worked at Mercedes-Benz US International Inc, where I got to work on GLS Maybach and GLE/GLS AMG cars. Some of the fundamentals learnt at UTA helped me improve cycle time of the production lines and dimensional quality of these cars.
Describe your UTA, The College of Engineering experience. How did UTA help prepare for your career achievement?
While at UTA, I worked on-campus as a Resident Assistant that helped me develop key skills such as leadership and time management. I also got to experience working as a volunteer at Mavs Go Green, Annual Celebration of Excellence by Students (ACES) and Health Fair '16 which gave me insights on how organizations work.
Also, the mentorship program, summer camps, and resources from Career Development Center helped me professionally./p>
How did your education in the College of Engineering prepare you for what you are doing today?
UTA College of Engineering offers courses such as Advanced Operation Research by Dr. LeBoulluec, Automation and Advanced Manufacturing by Dr. Huff, Operations Planning and Control Dr. Napier which are well inclined with the concepts automotive industry utilizes.
Also, each course had a project work that helped me learn about differential drive mobility platform, 3D printing, Time-Motion studies which helped me gain invaluable experience and are useful to me here at Tesla.
What advice would you give current students interested in pursuing a career in your field?
Inculcate a habit even if it's just for 10 mins a day, have a clearly defined goal, invest time in yourself, read some non-fiction books from Dale Carnegie, Tim Ferris, Ramit Sethi, and avoid making second mistake.
