Notes from Oyinkro
What is your major and what organization did you intern with?
I'm a sophomore in Aerospace Engineering at The University of Texas at Arlington. I have been an engineering intern at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in Fort Worth to gain valuable experience, knowledge, and connections in the field I love.
Beginning my internship in high school was exciting. It was my first job, albeit virtual, and it was at a company I've only ever heard of on the news. I didn't know what to expect, but my supervisor and mentor helped me get acquainted with the many ins and outs of communicating professionally, staying proactive and professional, and the many acronyms in place at Lockheed. My team was available at every step of the way, and my mentor allowed me to figure things out, make mistakes, and learn alongside her.
Describe your intern position in the field of aerospace engineering. How your knowledge as a COE student has contributed to your internship?
My internship last summer was during my freshman year of college, and I was on a design team, I got to learn much about the process that goes along the design stage at Lockheed. The introductory freshman classes helped prepare me for functioning properly in a professional setting and allowed me to carry myself with confidence and an aura of professionalism throughout my internship. Learning about different aspects of the aerospace industry allows me to gain experience in each and discover which I enjoy best for my career after I graduate from UTA.
Nearing the second half of my internship, I was tasked with a coding assignment. I have a coding background, but the project was challenging, and required many iterations and fine tuning, culminating in a working application I completed close to the end of my internship. The experience I gained from this project helps me to this day, as the field of aerospace engineering is programming-heavy, and courses like numerical analysis and engineering analysis rely on it heavily. I appreciate the time I spent at my internship and will carry the experiences I gained from it forever.
What learning experiences did you have going into this internship? And what's next for you?
I created an efficient Java application to detect discrepancies in formatted Bills of Materials and generate log files detailing those discrepancies and a search-indexing API for video searches based on topics generated, allowing us to quickly access and analyze the data. This entire process required me to use my knowledge of software engineering to develop an effective and efficient system.
What do you think you learned from the internship?
My next internship is on a different team as well, and I'm excited to begin. Having an internship gives me valuable experience in the field of Aerospace Engineering, and as I wish to branch out to the space industry, connections I have gained can help me along the way, and technical experience I have learned at my time at Lockheed will surely translate over. I'm incredibly grateful that I was given this opportunity, and that my time at UTA has helped me perform better at my job.
