Notes from Kyra

Kyra Delgado during her internship at Dunaway

Hi, I'm Kyra Delgado, a senior undergraduate student at the University of Texas at Arlington majoring in Civil Engineering. I have found the most surprising - and likely the most important advantage at UTA has been the number of student organizations. The variety of organizations provides engineering students the opportunity to learn more about their specific industry and network with professional engineers.

How did you find your internship? Did you have any specific criteria you followed to find an internship?

I have been fortunate to have had five civil engineering internships at four different companies. Each of those internships were identified by UTA's career fairs and organizations. The companies I worked with are: Johnson Volk Consulting, Inc., Shield Engineering Group, PLLC, Halff Associates, Inc., and Dunaway Associates, LLC. Each had amazing teams of engineers who taught me how to apply what I've learned at UTA to design the infrastructure for projects, including streets, utilities, water and wastewater management, drainage, and other systems for site developments utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D.

These internships were all in the site and land development engineering sector where I worked to ensure the projects could support residential, commercial, industrial, and mixed-use developments. Site and land development engineering encompasses a mix of civil engineering disciplines such as water resources, transportation, and environmental engineering that are taught at UTA.

What did you learn from your internship?

Internships have enabled me to improve communities in ways I never could have before. There are many roads, bridges, and buildings that are falling apart and in serious need of repair across America. When I see new developments being built, I can imagine how much it will improve people's lives. Every internship has been a very exciting and rewarding experience.

How does the college support you to your successful internship?

UTA's Engineering Career Readiness Initiatives department has always been adamant about communicating with students about engineering companies that were hiring, and that was my opportunity to secure my first internship with Johnson Volk Consulting, Inc. Other organizations at UTA that specialize in civil engineering and inform students of possible internships are the American Society of Civil Engineers, Chi Epsilon, and the Society of Professional Hispanic Engineers. These student organizations have monthly meetings where professional engineering alumni share their engineering journey and talk about what life is like after graduation. I networked with Shield Engineering Group, PLLC through Chi Epsilon because of their alumni presenters, and secured my second internship.

Career fairs are another great way I learned about the civil engineering industry. The American Society of Civil Engineers competes annually in the student symposium, where they hold a career fairs. Halff Associates, Inc participated in their career fair and that is where I secured my fourth internship. Moreover, UTA hosts career fairs twice a year where engineering companies come to talk with students. It was there I reached out to Dunaway Associates and secured my third internship. Now, I am interning with them again and will continue to work with them after I graduate this May.

All in all, I can't strive enough how beneficial it is to get involved in the various organizations. I have made lifelong friends and found most of my internships because of UTA. It has been quite exciting to have had the opportunity to work with and learn from professional engineers.
