Notes From Andres
Hi, I'm Andres Landeros, a senior undergraduate student at the University of Texas at Arlington majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Throughout my time at UTA, I have found that it is very beneficial to build connections early on. One way of doing so is by joining student organizations, such as SHEP. Furthermore, building connections between fellow classmates is beneficial both pre- and post-graduation.
I have had the opportunity to intern at Parker Aerospace as a Co-Op design engineer. This enabled me to work full-time for a span of 8 months in my career field of choice. The position offered real hands-on experience and improved my communication skills as much of the job required to work in a team of fellow engineers, technicians, and machinists. I believe that a Co-Op opportunity is much more valuable than a traditional 3-month summer internship as the experience allows you to become much more involved in your work. I strongly encourage anyone who is offered a Co-Op to take the opportunity as the experience is very rewarding.
How did you find your internship? Did you have any specific criteria you followed to find an internship?
The Engineering Career Readiness Initiatives department at UTA has been a very useful resource for me as this is how I landed my first internship experience at Parker Aerospace. I highly recommend current and future students to be on the lookout whenever Carole Coleman sends out job postings as she is well connected throughout many companies. In addition, being active on LinkedIn and building a strong connection can help when hunting for the next internship. Keeping your profile up-to-date and frequently revising your resume is very important, I have learned that as an engineer you are always learning, and these experiences can always be noted in your resume. I was able to acquire my second internship at Peterbilt by utilizing my LinkedIn profile to showcase my skills and experiences. Finally, confidence, being well-dressed, staying humble and putting your best foot forward during an interview goes a long way.
Do you have any recommendations for students looking into internship opportunity?
UTA provides students with the tools to be successful, however it our responsibility to use the tools properly. I am very grateful for the opportunities that I have been provided and will continue to strive for more.
