Notes from Damber

Hello, everyone. My name is Damber Bokati. I am a senior pursuing my undergraduate degree in computer science from The University of Texas at Arlington. I am also a student assistant at the Office of Information Technology at UTA and have been actively engaged in different on campus organizations. This summer, I am interning as a deployment engineer at Paycom.

How did you get this internship opportunity?

Over the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of interning at two outstanding companies: Paycom and Southwest Solutions Group (SSG).

I have been actively following Paycom for a long time and saw its opening on Handshake, where I applied for the role. After applying, I was contacted by the recruiter, followed by a technical interview and a final interview with the manager.

For SSG, I came to know about its opening through LinkedIn and applied for the role. The hiring process was smooth and included a behavioral round, technical round, and final interview with the manager.

What attracted you to the position? What did you like about this internship?

Paycom

I was attracted to the deployment engineer intern position at Paycom because of the company’s reputation for innovation and excellence in software development and deployment. The opportunity to work with cutting-edge tools and technologies, such as Docker, Jenkins and Gitlab, was particularly appealing.

What I liked most about this internship was the collaborative environment and the support from my colleagues. I had the opportunity to work closely with experienced professionals, learn from their expertise and contribute to impactful projects. The culture at Paycom encourages continuous learning and growth, which has been incredibly motivating and rewarding.

Southwest Solutions Group

I was drawn to the software developer intern position at Southwest Solutions Group because of the opportunity to use my skills in front- and back-end development. As mentioned in the job description, the opportunity to work closely with the experienced developers to develop new applications was appealing to me.

What I liked most about this internship was the opportunity to work with senior developers. I also enjoyed working with the other 17 interns across the department to build a cookbook project, for which I worked to develop a web application.

What are you most proud of/what have you accomplished as an intern?

At Paycom, I am most proud of working to deploy an enterprise-level internal application using CI/CD pipeline to the Paycom server, which will be used by several departments throughout the company. Additionally, developing a chatbot using Python to streamline Jira ticket updates has been a notable accomplishment.

At SSG, I am particularly proud of revamping the company’s e-commerce web application for over 150 employees. This project involved adding user-friendly features like a local storage shopping cart, discount codes and payroll deductions integration, which greatly enhanced the user experience. I am also proud of developing an efficient asset-tracking web application, ensuring seamless management, and tracking of equipment throughout the company.

What are/was the most valuable thing you learned?

The most valuable things that I have learned from both of my internship experiences is teamwork. I worked closely with my mentors and supervisors and my co-interns to develop and deploy some impactful applications. I also learned many tools, such as YAML, Docker, Jenkins, GitLab, C#, AngularJS and many more.

In what way(s) has this experience impacted you the most?

My internships at Paycom and Southwest Solutions Group have been transformative, significantly developing both my professional skills and leadership abilities. They’ve deepened my understanding of application development, testing and deployment processes while also inspiring me to pursue advanced challenges in the tech industry. These experiences continue to shape my career aspirations, equipping me with a diverse skill set and solid foundation for future endeavors in software engineering and development.

Any advice for students looking for an internship?

For students seeking internships, I suggest researching companies that match your career goals. Networking at events such as career fairs and through platforms like LinkedIn can also open doors to opportunities. Make your résumé and portfolio showcase relevant skills and experiences, and practice interview techniques to confidently discuss your strengths. Taking a proactive approach, expressing genuine enthusiasm and being open to diverse opportunities will greatly enhance your chances of securing a valuable internship that aligns with your professional aspirations.

The college of engineering: what you learned at the COE and how you’ve applied these skills in your career.

The most important lesson I learned from COE is the power of teamwork. Through numerous group projects, I honed my ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues toward achieving common goals. This experience not only enhanced my skills in web and app development but also taught me the importance of communication, delegation and collective problem-solving. These teamwork skills have proven invaluable in my professional career, enabling me to contribute effectively to team efforts and deliver impactful results in software development projects. This knowledge has been instrumental in both of my internships, helping me succeed and grow in challenging and dynamic environments.

How would an internship help you reach your career goals?

An internship plays a crucial role in helping me reach my career goals by providing practical, hands-on experience in a real-world work environment. It allows me to apply theoretical knowledge gained from academics to actual projects and challenges. This experience not only strengthens my technical skills but also exposes me to industry best practices, professional networks, and mentorship opportunities. Internships offer valuable insights into different facets of the tech industry, helping me clarify my career interests and goals. Moreover, they enhance my résumé, making me a more competitive candidate for future job opportunities. Overall, an internship serves as a steppingstone toward achieving my career aspirations by preparing me with relevant skills, experience, and industry knowledge.
