Glossary of Relevant Terminology

Academic Early alert

A process for faculty and staff members to submit a concern about a student due to absences, academic performance issues, tutoring or academic coaching needs, barriers to timely degree completion, or other academic reasons. Referrals made through the academic early alert process will be routed to appropriate and specific staff members across campus accordingly. Please visit go.uta.edu/earlyalert to make a referral.


Behavioral Intervention Team
A resource for faculty, staff, and students to address the needs of students who are experiencing significant behavioral disturbances or if there are concerns for the health, safety, and welfare of the students and members of the UTA community. Sometimes referred to as the BIT team. The BIT team works closely with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), University Police and other campus partners as appropriate.
Early progress report
A report made by an instructor of a student’s grade in a course at a particular snapshot in time around the 4th week of classes. Sometimes referred to as 4-week grades. Usually limited to particular student populations such as first-time in college students, student-athletes, students not in good academic standing, etc. Students with poor grades on these progress reports will be communicated with by staff in the Division of Student Success or another appropriate office.
Inspire for Faculty
A tool for faculty members to track student engagement in courses. Faculty are able to use the tool for proactive communication with students. Sometimes referred to as IFF.
Midterm progress report
A report made by an instructor of a student’s grade in a course at a particular snapshot in time around the 8th week of classes. Sometimes referred to as midterm grades or 8-week grades. Usually limited to particular student populations such as first-time in college students, student-athletes, students not in good academic standing, etc. Students with poor grades on these progress reports will be communicated with by staff in the Division of Student Success or another appropriate office.
Graduation Help Desk
A resource for faculty, staff, and students to address the needs of students who are experiencing a barrier to timely degree progression. Typically related, but not limited, to academically-oriented matters. Sometimes referred to as the GHD. Referrals made through the academic early alert process will be reviewed by the GHD staff and other offices as appropriate.
