Established in 2019,
the Smart Coast Initiative at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) is an interdisciplinary effort that brings together expertise from the College of Engineering (CoE) and the College of Architecture, Planning, and Public Affairs (CAPPA) that secured over $2.6 million in federal funding. Co-chaired by Dr. Michelle Hummel (Civil Engineering) and Dr. Oswald Jenewein (Architecture & Urbanism), the initiative focuses on developing resilient solutions for coastal communities facing environmental challenges within and beyond the built environment.
Community engagement is a core method of the Smart Coast Initiative, emphasizing the importance of involving residents, stakeholders, and decision-makers in the development and implementation of solutions for coastal resilience. This approach ensures that the strategies and innovations proposed are not only technically sound but also socially relevant.
