TRIO Student Support Services

Student Support Services

Student Support Services is a component of the federal TRIO programs, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, and established at UT Arlington in 1976.

The goal of SSS is to improve academic performance, increase retention and graduation rates, and foster an environment that supports undergraduate students through the completion of their first bachelor’s degree. Each student works with a TRIO Success Coach to explore current academic goals/needs and develops a plan for success. The focus on individualized guidance and support addresses each student’s needs, strengths, and areas for improvement. Students will focus on the following areas:

  • Academics
  • Career exploration
  • Financial literacy
  • Graduate or Professional school exploration
  • Personal & social matters

Eligibility

TRIO Student Support Services offers holistic support services to students enrolled at UT Arlington. Participants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who meet eligibility requirements; priority is given to students who meet any two of the following:

  • First-generation student: This means that neither of your parents (or guardians) have completed a 4-year college degree.
  • Low-income students: May be required to furnish documentation of income (i.e. tax returns, W2 form, FAFSA, etc.).
  • Student with a disability: SSS program staff will confirm registration with the UTA Student Access and Resource Center.

Our Services

The TRIO SSS staff assist students with selecting courses, setting academic goals, developing strategies for academic achievement, and preparing for meetings with their major academic advisors. Students work directly with our staff to explore current academic needs and the resources available to develop an individualized system of support.

Services may include:

  • Coaching & Guidance
  • Workshops
  • Financial Education
  • Tutoring & Study Skills

Coaching & Guidance

Each participant works with a TRIO Success Coach to explore their current academic needs and the resources available to develop a plan of action. The TRIO coaches are knowledgeable of UT Arlington's requirements and expectations and help participants find solutions to problems they may encounter.

Workshops

Our workshops educate and assist participants in developing the necessary skills to achieve their goals. TRIO SSS conducts workshops in a number of areas related to academic success and personal development.

Financial Education and Programming

TRIO SSS offers information about federal student aid, assistance in applying for financial aid, and activities designed to inform participants about financial and economic literacy.

  • Information on applying for financial aid (grants, scholarships, loans, etc.)
  • Assistance in applying for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Education/counseling to improve financial and economic literacy
