Beginning the Journey

EDUCATE

Meet with an advisor

Review CORE and art history foundation degree requirements

Make sure to take the Methods in Art History course as early as possible to begin sharpening critical research and writing skills

Begin considering a minor focus based on your related interests

Consider free tutoring at the IDEAS Center (2nd floor of Central Library)

Take advantage of the resources offered in the Visual Resource Commons and Libraries

ENGAGE

Join the Art History Student Union (student association)

View the public art collections around campus

Attend lectures related to art and art history on campus and beyond

Visit Dallas-Fort Worth art museums/galleries and participate in events

Engage with objects of art first-hand by taking a Museum Studies course

EXCEL

Work toward a GPA of 3.5+ and being on the Honor Roll

Consider joining the Honor's College

Attend the College-to-Career orientation session with Career Services and speak with them about on-campus and summer job opportunities

Become a better writer and use the Writing Center

Present your research at the Art History Student Union symposium

Attend Advisathon

Start building relationships with the art history faculty (who will write recommendation letters later) to discuss research opportunities and your specific interests

Take the advanced art history courses that relate to your interests and ensure you have a broad range of knowledge

Visit the UTA Study Abroad Office for international opportunities or inquire within the Art and Art History Department

ENGAGE

Visit UTA Libraries Special Collections to engage with the archival materials present on campus

Attend public lectures by international scholars hosted on campus (Visiting Artist, Maverick Speaker, Women's History Month, Black History Month, Termini lectures, etc.)

Visit centers and interdisciplinary programs on campus to learn more (Center for African American Studies, Center for Mexican American Studies, Center for Service Learning, Pre-Law, Women & Gender Studies, Medical Humanities, etc.)

Take a service learning course

EXCEL

Complete an internship either on campus or at a local museum to gain professional experience

Attend an academic conference related to your interests (College Art Conference or a conference focused on a topic/region of study)

Volunteer with local art-based organizations such as the Fort Worth Community Arts Center

Become an Art Student Ambassador
