Passport & Visas

*If mailing your passport and/or visa application, always send by a postal method that can be tracked in case your application documents are lost in the mail.

All students need a valid passport to travel abroad. You should apply for a passport well in advance to avoid any conflict that may delay your departure. Make sure it is valid through at least six months beyond the end of the program. New passports cost approximately $165; renewals cost approximately $130. Expedited service is also available for an additional fee. Passport applications can be obtained at most post offices, or you can download an application from the  U.S. Department of State Passport Information  website.

The George W. Hawkes Downtown Library is now a Passport Application Acceptance Facility

In addition to the application, you will need to provide proof of citizenship (e.g., a certified copy of your birth certificate or an expired passport), proof of identity (e.g., valid driver's license) and two (2) passport-ready (2 x 2 inches) photos taken within six months of submitting your application.

If you will travel on a non-U.S. passport, check with your country of citizenship for passport requirements. Please also be aware that visa requirements may be different. Consult with UTA Study Abroad staff if you are unsure how to proceed.

International students should also consult with an International Student and Scholar advisor regarding their travel plans as it may impact their status here.
A visa is a stamp or attachment in your passport that allows you to enter a specific country for a certain period of time. It may be necessary to obtain a visa to study abroad depending on the country and the proposed length of stay. Each country has particular requirements for application materials and visa processing. You can find out the visa requirements for the country you will be studying by visiting the US Department of State Country Information website. The UTA Study Abroad will assist you as needed, but it is your responsibility to apply for a visa and to inform yourself of the visa requirements for your particular country of study.

There is almost always a fee attached to the visa application, and the process can take up to several weeks. Visa application fees are not included in the cost of the program. Please do not wait until the last minute to obtain a visa. You will not be able to board your plane unless the visa is in your hands.
