Students do not always ask for help when they need it. So in an effort to identify students in distress or in need of additional support, UTA has created a network of professionals from across campus that are committed to a caring, confidential program of identification, intervention and response.

Student Complaint Filing Process

Find the unit or area responsible for the issue in the Departments drop down menu to the left and follow their process for resolution. Be sure to keep track of your efforts to resolve the complaint and if necessary, an appeal. This may include emails, names of persons contacted, dates of meetings and documents submitted.

Formal Appeal Form

If your complaint, appeal, or concern is still not resolved AND you possess evidence that you were treated differently than your peers and/or the institution processes or policies were not followed, complete the UTA Student Formal Appeal Form below. The Formal Appeal Form may not be used for final appeals on grades, nor on student disciplinary decisions as administered by the Office of Student Conduct. The form is a final appeal to the Dean of Students based on evidence of differential treatment and/or procedural irregularities.

Definitions

Complaint

A complaint involves a problem or issue other than a disciplinary measure. Complaints may be academic or nonacademic and may only be considered if submitted in writing.

Appeal

An appeal is a review of a decision that is deemed unfair or excessive, including dissatisfaction with a grade, or progression, probation, or dismissal from a program. Appeals are made through established university procedures and final decision rests with the academic or administrative unit unless evidence is presented of differential treatment or procedural irregularities.

Differential Treatment

Differential treatment is providing benefits such as extra time for assignments to some but not all students in the class. Exceptions such as excluding some students from attendance or other course requirements.

Procedural Irregularities

Procedural irregularities include adding a new requirement that was not listed in the class syllabus. Using criteria for grades not included in the course syllabus.
