Spark for German
IGNITING SPARKS FOR GERMAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE IN THE COMMUNITY
Since Fall 2023, MODL students learning German have facilitated weekly enrichment opportunities at schools in the City of Arlington.
Through engaging cultural topics junior high students will explore the German-speaking world. Basic language instruction will be interwoven throughout so they learn useful every-day phrases, for example how to properly greet somebody or how to describe what they like to do at school and in their spare time.
“This is an exciting project”, said Dr. Barbara Berthold, Coordinator of German and Modern Language Teaching, “our students will be able to use their cultural knowledge and language skills in a real-world setting. They will plan, teach and reflect on their lessons and thus serve as advocates for intercultural understanding and language learning.”
The project falls under the umbrella of SPARK for German, a community engagement and advocacy program sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG), the Goethe-Institut, and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, Washington.
