Testing

Are you interested in finding the language course best suited to your level, or testing out of language courses to receive course credits? You have come to the right place. Read below about options for PLACEMENT TESTING and CREDIT BY EXAMINATION.

WHICH TEST SHOULD I TAKE?

PLACEMENT TESTING | AVANT PLACE TEST

If you have previous experience in American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese, French, German,
Korean, Russian, or Spanish, and would like to enroll in a course in one of these languages at
UTA, you must take a Placement Test.

A placement test assures that you continue your language-learning journey at the appropriate
level. Students may receive credit for previous courses by enrolling in the course they
place into and remaining enrolled past Census Date.

In the example below, the student placed into 2314 and received course credit
for 1441, 1442, and 2313.

Language 1441 Language 1442 Language 2313 Language 2314
CR CR CR Enrolled past Census Date

Note that there will be an academic administration testing service fee of $25 for each course level
you wish to apply to your transcript. Any credits received will only be applied to UTA transcripts
if the academic administration testing service fee is paid before the last semester prior to graduation.

Students admitted to UTA before the fall/spring semesters begin must take the Placement Test
before the first day of classes. For late registration, students must take the Placement Test no
later than the second day of classes to allow sufficient time for scores to post and to enroll in
the appropriate course in the sequence.

CREDIT BY EXAMINATION | AVANT STAMP TEST

The Avant STAMP test will be used to grant credit by examination in Arabic, ASL, Chinese, French, German, Korean, Russian, and Spanish up to the intermediate level II (2314).

Students should allow at least three (3) hours to complete the Avant STAMP test. Note that there will be an academic administration testing service fee of $25 for each course level you wish to apply to your transcript.

Students taking the Avant STAMP test to fulfill a language requirement must take it before the end of their Junior year to allow enough time to take any future courses that may be needed to satisfy a language requirement and/or to have their credits posted in time for graduation application reviews. The Avant STAMP test will not be administered to Seniors in their last semester at UTA for the purpose of receiving course credit.

There are no retakes for the Avant STAMP test.

If grades or credits have already been posted to UTA transcript via transfer, other tests, or taking the language courses, taking the Avant STAMP test cannot override the existing grades or credits. If student is enrolled in a language course and stayed enrolled past the Census Day, they cannot test out of this course via Avant STAMP and must finish the course to receive credit.

UTA STUDENTS PLEASE NOTE CREDIT BY EXAM POLICY: "Credit by examination can be awarded only for courses in which the student has neither a passing nor a failing grade (including a Z in English) at UTA or transfer credit from another institution of higher education." To read the complete list of credit-by-exam policies for UTA please go to: https://www.uta.edu/student-success/resources/testing-services/credit-by-examination

Do you want to receive letter grades (A’s) for the courses you test out of?

(Note, it might be a requirement for your degree plan (e.g., MODL major, minor, and certificate students.))

= > Take the Avant STAMP test and plan to enroll in the next-level language course in the upcoming semester.

The credits received through the Avant STAMP test with a letter grade will only be applied to UTA transcripts if the following conditions are met: 1) the examinee enrolls in the next appropriate language course in the sequence at UTA and remains enrolled in the course past Census Day, and 2) the administration fee is paid before the last semester prior to graduation.

Students admitted to UTA before the fall/spring semesters begin who are planning to take the next-level language course must take the Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Korean, Russian, and Spanish Avant STAMP test at least 2 weeks before the first day of classes, and ASL STAMP test at least 4 weeks before the first day of classes.

For late registration, students cannot take the Avant STAMP test, but must take the Avant PLACE test instead (see above) no later than the second day of classes to allow sufficient time for scores to post and to enroll in the appropriate course in the sequence.

Do you want to receive credits only (no letter grades) for the courses you test out of and not enroll in the next-level course?

= > Take the Avant STAMP test.

The credits received through the Avant STAMP test will only be applied to UTA transcripts if the administration fee is paid before the last semester prior to graduation.

Grading Rubric

To test out of a particular course level, students must score within the range indicated
below (or higher) on the composite score:

- For second language learners of Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Korean, Russian, and Spanish, the composite score is the average of four parts (reading, writing, listening, speaking).

For heritage learners of Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Korean, Russian, and Spanish, the composite score is the average of two parts (reading and writing), although students must take all four parts of the test and have the average score of all four parts no lower than the average of their reading and writing. In case it is lower, the composite score of four parts will be used to determine the course level.

- For ASL learners, the composite score is the average of two parts (interpretive and productive).

REGISTRATION FOR A TEST

ATTENTION! If you are planning to enroll in the next-level language course in Spring 2025 semester, the last day to take the Avant STAMP (Credit by Examination Test) is December 20, 2024. If you miss the Avant Stamp deadline, you have the option to take the Avant PLACE up until January 2nd, 2025 to be able to enroll in a language class for Spring 2025. It is best to take this test at least a week before the semester starts to avoid any late registration fees or risks that classes are full.

To register for the Placement Test (Avant PLACE), fill out a Placement Test Registration Form

To register for the Credit by Examination Test (Avant STAMP), fill out a Credit by Examination Registration Form.

Our testing team will contact you with further instructions after you submit your form.

ATTENTION: CAP students are only allowed to take Credit by Examination Test (Avant STAMP) due to the risk of not having a suitable course to take in the sequence.

ENROLLING IN THE NEXT-LEVEL LANGUAGE CLASS

If you have taken the MODL Avant test and are planning to enroll in the next level, you must enroll the next semester after taking the test.

Note that if the course is not offered the next semester or there is any other valid justification that prevents you from enrolling, you can enroll in the semester immediately following that one as soon as enrollment opens. Please make sure to provide justification and supporting documentation. E-mail modladvisor@uta.edu to get manually enrolled in the course. This will ensure that you secure your spot in the class and do not lose your Avant test credit.

We will hold your scores for one semester until you enroll in the next-level class. The scores will be processed after the Census Date of that semester.

Technical Support

If you have any technical difficulties during the test, you must contact Avant Support at the
