Studying how bacteria grow to fight infections

Administered by the Office of Vice President for Research and Innovation, the Research Enhancement Program (REP) provides internal seed funding to help faculty explore bold new directions. One 2025 grant is supporting Dr. Cara Boutte's study of "polar growth" in bacteria—a bizarre growth pattern found in the organism that causes tuberculosis. This internal investment is designed to generate the preliminary data needed to secure larger federal grants, accelerating the development of more targeted and effective antibiotics.

Regents invest $127M in UTA’s campus

In September 2025, the UT System Board of Regents allocated nearly $127 million to UTA to modernize campus facilities and laboratories. This historic investment in infrastructure is a cornerstone of research enhancement, ensuring that UTA’s Carnegie R1 status—shared by only the top 5% of universities—is supported by world-class environments. The funding allows faculty to push the boundaries of discovery in revitalized spaces designed for high-impact scientific inquiry and innovation.
