Charles Hermes

Research Interests: Metaphysics, Philosophy of Mind and Action, Philosophy of Science.

Dr. Charles Hermes is the undergraduate advisor for the Department of Philosophy and Humanities and serves the majors and minors.

Special Advisors

Dr. Hermes performs the computer tasks involved with advising for all students, and he directs philosophy majors and minors in their programs. In addition, the following special advisors are also available.

GRADUATE WORK IN CLASSICAL STUDIES

Students intending to apply for graduate work in Classics should take Greek and/or Latin, as well as methodology classes in Art & Art History and/or Sociology and Anthropology. Contact Dr. Martin Gallagher by early Fall in the year of application.

GRADUATE WORK IN PHILOSOPHY

Majors who are interested in graduate work in philosophy should consult with Dr. Kenneth Williford, the department graduate advisor, during their junior year.

PRE-LAW

Majors who intend to apply to law school will find courses in critical thinking, contemporary moral problems, logic, ethics, philosophy of law, and philosophy of language particularly useful. Interested students should consult Dr. Shaun House, a philosophy professor who is also a licensed attorney. Students are also strongly encouraged to take advantage of the resources available at U.T. Arlington's Pre-Law Center.

MIND LANGUAGE AND COGNITION OPTION

Students interested in the Mind, Language, and Cognition (MLC) Option in philosophy must complete the requirements for the General Track degree in philosophy, with a minor in linguistics, and psychology as their area of secondary emphasis for elective course work. (For more information, choose The Philosophy Major from the left menu.) Specific major, minor, and elective courses should be selected in consultation with the MLC advisor in philosophy, Dr. Kenneth Williford. Students who are interested in any of the following, contact Dr. Charles Hermes.

PRE-BUSINESS

It is possible to combine the philosophy major with a business administration minor in preparation for business school. (See Liberal Arts Major/Business Administration Minor section in the introduction of the College of Liberal Arts entry in the Undergraduate Catalog.)

PRE-THEOLOGICAL

Majors who plan to enter a school of theology should consider a minor in classics and foreign language preparation in Greek and/or Latin. Electives in ethics and philosophy of religion are particularly recommended.

PRE-MEDICAL

A departmental faculty advisor is available to assist majors who intend to apply to medical school. The major program will be coordinated with the Health Professions Advising Office of the College of Science. Interested students should contact Dr. Steven Gellman or the UTA Health Professions Office.
