Maritza De LeonUT Arlington affiliation: senior biology major from Fort Worth

Stopped: 11:44 a.m. Aug. 30, on the University Center mall at the 25th annual Activities Fair

What organization are you representing?
Lambda Theta Alpha. It’s the first national sorority to cater to Latina women. It was established in 1975 at Kean University in New Jersey. It’s an academic sorority. Our chapter was established in 2003.

How many members do you have?
Right now we have 13 active members.

What are the advantages of being in a sorority?
It’s a support group to help us succeed in school and achieve our goals. Ultimately, our goal is to graduate.

When will you graduate?
August 2007.

What are your career plans?
I want to go into pharmaceutical sales.

What do you like most about the Activities Fair?
I like to see how excited freshmen are about college life. It’s fun to tell them about your experiences. I got here at 7 this morning to claim a table. I went to class for a couple of hours, then came back. The cheap food is good, too.

Did you try the veggie burgers?
No, I ate a real hamburger. I wanted some meat.

Are you aware of the University’s “Be A Maverick” communications campaign?
Yes, I’ve seen it all over campus.

What makes you a Maverick?
I am a Maverick because I believe in becoming a successful person by acquiring the knowledge and tools you need to do so. I believe that a true Maverick needs to become a part of a campus organization to obtain the full college experience.
