“Service Learning is an opportunity to answer the 'so what' to applying your philosophy into application."
Teaching under the College of Business in management, Retzloff emphasizes his passion of being active within the community amongst his students and being a representative for the Goolsby Leadership Academy at UTA. Before becoming involved with the service-learning program, Correy would incorporate an activity similar to service learning but was recommended by a colleague to enter the fellows program to facilitate his knowledge base and connect the theories and principles of service learning. He had knowledge about activities where the community can be brought into the classroom but did not know it was called service learning. Correy had a meaningful experience as a fellow due to diverse interactions with different professors in other colleges to gain new perspectives on the world that could be applied in his style of learning. He believes that service learning is a way to partner with the community to spread awareness interaction and giving back to the community as well as exposing students to it at large. For faculty who are hesitant on integrating service learning into their course, Correy recommends researching community partners that would best fit your course and questioning what is holding you back from incorporating service learning. |
