“Service Learning is important because it doesn't just support a specific study or discipline. It supports the person, the student themselves, becoming a well-rounded individual."
Since 2011, Cheryl Mitchell has been teaching at UTA and involves herself beyond the classroom setting. She is the collections specialist who manages the fine art collections and leads several of the classes for our museum studies career-based program. She makes it her mission to spread her passion of volunteering and activism within the community amongst her students. With the discovery of service learning, she was able to effectively incorporate her passion into her coursework. Cheryl had an enjoyable experience being a part of the Faculty Fellows Program. She reveals that the camaraderie of the individuals led to meaningful relationships within the program. Cheryl believes that service learning is an important tool because it is a gateway to get the incoming generation of students into the real world and launch themselves into their desired profession. Applying service learning to classes essentially breaks away from the screen-oriented norm and introduces the students to insight on connecting with others. She advises faculty who are hesitant on incorporating service learning into their courses to give it a shot and find your stance on this as an instructor. |
