“It's worth it. What you see at the end of the project, the reflection from the students, the way they gain that appreciation about your course and the community, I've never heard them say things like that before."
Aida Allen, who has been a math professor for UTA since 2017, incorporated a service-learning component into her business math course (MATH 1315). Dr. Allen decided to make this change in her curriculum after overhearing two faculty members’ encouraging experiences with service learning and the positive impact it had within their classes. Aida feels that service learning will help her students connect with the community and the outside world to make learning practical, which enhances the holistic learning processes. She believes service learning can benefit students in all disciplines in their life, and more specifically, it grants them the exposure needed to utilize their earned degrees effectively within the real world. When asked what interested her in incorporating a service component into her course, Dr. Aida explained that although there is great effort that goes into implementing service learning within a course, it is completely worth it because of the overall experiential outcome that it has on both the students and instructors. She highly recommends incorporating service learning to other faculty members who are considering adding it into their course and advises to take one step at a time by implementing service learning into one class each semester to become familiar with the process.
