“The goal of my research is to bring interdisciplinary perspectives to the issue of sound change, a process in which new sound patterns develop in a community over time.”
Tell us a little about your story, what brought you to UTA?
I just finished my Ph.D. at Ohio State University, and I am excited to start my professional career at an institution that highly values research development and prioritizes excellence in all aspects of the undergraduate experience. I have received such a warm welcome from the community here.
What are your academic and research interests?
I am trained as a sociolinguist, phonetician, and phonologist. The goal of my research is to bring interdisciplinary perspectives to the issue of sound change, a process in which new sound patterns develop in a community over time. I am interested in why and how sound change occurs, and especially how it can affect participants’ cognitive representations of language variation. My research focuses on the role that exposure plays in these cognitive representations. I employ corpus methods, like speech production experiments, and experimental methods, like eye-tracking, to investigate these theoretical issues from multiple angles.
Any desired interdisciplinary collaborations?
I am excited to collaborate with anyone who has an interest in or adjacent to language, regardless of discipline.
Anything else you’d like to share?
In my spare time, I am an avid baseball fan and canine enthusiast.
