Manufacturing Automation and Robotic Systems Laboratory

The Manufacturing Automation and Robotic Systems Lab is a dual-purpose lab, catering to both academic research and industry-sponsored research. Academically, it is used as a teaching environment for manufacturing, automation and robotics based classes and/or research where hands on robotic instruction is encouraged at both the graduate and undergraduate level. Industry-funded research projects involve automated workcell studies using state of the art hardware and software tools. These interactions provide not just additional educational and research opportunities to the student, but also provide valuable research to the sponsoring company. This interaction helps to bring university and corporate resources together in beneficial ways for both.

The real beneficiaries, however, are the students who graduate better prepared in the fields of robotics, manufacturing, automation and controls.

The laboratory is a dual-use laboratory where in addition to the advanced research activities, educational activities utilizing the resources of the lab relating to robotics, manufacturing, automation and controls take place.

Research focuses on the general areas of robotics, biomedical, manufacturing, microsystems, automation and controls as they apply to the betterment of society.

Current and recent research projects include:
  • Cornea graft transplantation by understanding associated issues through theoretical analysis of the cornea tissue graft
  • Magnetotaxis of micro-nano particles in a fluidic environment
  • Micro-nano particle controlled translocation and manipulation based on active surface concept
  • Automated path planning with force control application of robotic devices based on digitally acquired data for surgical and other operations
  • Automated path planning of flexible surgical instruments and HRI in surgical environments
  • Human-robot interaction and haptics through the development of upper arm prosthesis device to be setup in a master-slave configuration
  • Analysis of denture devices
  • Additive manufacturing (3D printing) through the development of a modular expandable printing environment for research on the use of various materials with applications for biomedical implantable devices and other custom personalized devices
  • Scoliosis rehabilitation devices
  • Lower extremity device for hip surgery rehabilitation for children
  • Control the in-house developed magnetic levitation research and teaching system/testbed using myRIO real time control device from National Instruments
  • Investigation in the development of educational and research platforms for robotics, manufacturing, dynamics, real time controls, etc.
