MEN TAKE SLC TRACK TITLE

The men's track and field team won its first Southland Conference outdoor title since 1997 in May, edging UT San Antonio by one point. The Mavericks won the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay when sophomore Eddie Beckwith passed three runners on the final leg. Senior Jared Connaughton won the 200-meter dash, and senior Jon McDowell won the 110-meter hurdles. John Sauerhage was named men's SLC Coach of the Year.

SOFTBALL WINS REGULAR SEASON

The softball team posted a 19-5 SLC record to win its third regular-season conference title. Junior Katie Jones was named Player of the Year and Hitter of the Year. She batted .442 with 13 home runs and 34 RBIs in the regular season. Heather Fortenberry was selected Freshman of the Year, and Debbie Hedrick was named Coach of the Year. The Mavericks, who finished 36-16 overall, lost to Sam Houston State in May in the SLC Tournament.

ABANOBI EXCELS IN CLASSROOM

For the second-straight year, junior guard Maryann Abanobi has been selected as the Southland Conference Women's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year. The award goes to the player in each conference sport who achieves excellence in academics and athletics. Abanobi, a bio-chemistry major, has a 3.47 grade-point average. A two-time all-SLC selection, she averaged 10.8 points this past season.

MOVIN' MAVS WIN INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

Two players from the Movin' Mavs wheelchair basketball team were honored at the 30th annual National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Association Tournament in Edinboro, Pa., in March. Sophomore forward Aaron Gouge was named Player of the Year and earned first-team All-America honors, while junior guard Danny Fik received the Sportsmanship Award. Coach Jim Hayes' team, which was defending its 2006 title, lost to Southwest Minnesota State in the second round and finished fifth overall.

GRIFFIN, GUIGNARD LEAD MAVERICKS

Junior center Jermaine Griffin was named to the 2007 All-Southland Conference men's basketball first team while guard Ro'ger Guignard was named SLC Freshman of the Year. Griffin was among the nation's leaders in field goal percentage and set a school record for blocks in a season. Guignard became the second UT Arlington player (Willie Brand was the first) to make 70 or more three-pointers in a season.

SENIORS GUIDE INDOOR TRACK TO SECOND

Senior Jared Connaughton won the 200-meter dash and was second in the 60 meters to help the men's track team finish second in the Southland Conference Indoor Championships in Houston in February. Senior Koby Styles won the 5,000 meters, and senior Coby Morrison finished second in the 200. The women finished third.

TENNIS PLAYERS HONORED

Southeastern Louisiana defeated UT Arlington in the finals of the SLC Women's Tennis Championship at San Antonio in April. In the men's tournament, the defending champion Mavericks lost in the semifinals to UT San Antonio. Junior transfer Dmitry Minkin was named men's Newcomer of the Year and earned singles first-team all-conference, as did junior Alberto Agis. The men's doubles teams of Minkin and Agis, plus senior Javier Herrera and junior Diego Matter also earned first-team honors. For the women, senior Daniela Novakova was named to the first team in singles while senior Marissa Brown and freshman Sofya Lifanova were first team in doubles.

RUNNER RECEIVES ACADEMIC HONOR

Junior Jodi Hulett was named to the NCAA Division I All-Academic Women's Cross Country Team by the U.S. Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The kinesiology major earned a 3.7 grade-point average and was chosen along with 76 others from around the nation. She finished third in the Southland Conference cross county meet last fall and ninth at the NCAA regional, earning an invitation to the NCAA championships.
