A building for Baker
Chemistry Research Building renamed The Chemistry Research Building was renamed the W.A. Baker Chemistry Research Building during ceremonies in April. Dr. Baker came to UTA in 1971 as the first dean of the Graduate School. In 1973, he became vice president for academic affairs, a position he held for 20 years. Under his direction, the University added 49 degrees, many at the master’s and doctoral levels. He was also a professor of chemistry. He left UTA in 1995 to become vice president for academic affairs at UT Tyler, serving in that capacity until he retired in 2001. He became interim dean of the College of Sciences at UT San Antonio in 2004. Following his one-year term, he plans to retire and return with his wife, Cynthia, to their home in Keller. “To have my name on the Chemistry Research Building is the perfect trifecta,” he said at the unveiling. “It’s chemistry, research and UTA.”
