GAANN Graduate Fellowships

The Department of Physics at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) has eight fellowships for qualified students pursuing a Ph.D. in Physics and Astronomy. These prestigious fellowships for Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) are provided by a grant awarded to the Physics Department by the U.S. Department of Education. Each of our GAANN fellows receive a generous stipend (up to $37,000 per calendar year, depending on individual needs as determined by their FAFSA application) plus educational expenses to cover tuition, fees, etc.

GAANN fellowships are available to U.S. citizens or permanent residents pursuing a Ph.D. in Physics at UTA. These fellowships are awarded competitively to outstanding applicants satisfying the eligibility criteria. The fellows are expected to obtain their Ph.D. degrees within five years from the start of the fellowship. Women and minorities are particularly encouraged to apply. In selecting our GAANN fellows, we do not discriminate based on gender, race, national origin, color, disability, or age. GAANN qualification is evaluated every year, and extensions are made depending on the availability of funds and student performance. To continue the fellowship, students must demonstrate good progress toward their Ph.D. Additional employment is not allowed while holding this fellowship.

GAANN fellowship applicants must complete and submit the online FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form. The Federal School Code for the University of Texas at Arlington is 003656, which should be indicated in step 6 of the FAFSA form. Once the FAFSA form is processed, a Student Aid Report (SAR) will be generated, and the UTA Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will notify you. If you are a prospective student, apply to the UTA Physics PhD program before the admissions priority deadlines and before submitting your GAANN application. You are also strongly encouraged to notify the Physics GAANN program director Dr. Amir Shahmoradi (email: a.shahmoradi@uta.edu) of your intent to apply for the Physics Ph.D. and GAANN fellowship programs. The Ph.D. application priority deadline is February 1 for fall admissions, August 15 for spring admissions, and February 15 for summer admissions.

For inquiries or further information about the UTA Physics GAANN program, please contact the program director, Dr. Amir Shahmoradi (email: a.shahmoradi@uta.edu).
