What is Chemistry?
Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes that matter undergoes when it is subjected to different environments and conditions. Chemistry involves elements and compounds composed of atoms, molecules and ions, and the study of their composition, structure, properties, behavior and the changes that take place in them during reactions with other substances. Chemists investigate the properties of matter at the atomic and molecular level. They create much-needed new compounds for use in a wide variety of practical applications, and they also work to improve the quality of established chemical products.
Biochemists study the chemical principles of living things and of biological processes, such as cell development, growth, and disease. They analyze enzymes, DNA, and other molecules to study the effects of pharmaceutical drugs and food on biological processes.
Our faculty in the UTA Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry are award-winning chemists and biochemists who take great care and interest in the success of their students. They equip their students with the tools they need to become leaders in their field as well as lifelong learners. Our research faculty oversee robust research programs which provide superior training for graduate students, while also providing excellent opportunities for undergraduate students to become involved in research early in their academic careers.
