The 2nd Annual Research Symposium took place in the Rio Grande Room on October 7, 2016. Research Symposium participants experienced a day-long event packed with expert speakers and interesting conversations. Dr. Jon Weidanz, Assistant Vice President for Research, introduced the symposium's keynote speaker.

Kirstin Morningstar, Director of Regulatory Services at UTA, discusses university and regulatory considerations for those conducting research.

For lunch, participants broke into groups to discuss interesting case studies involving research collaboration. Each group traded ideas about research collaboration and shared the highlights of their conversations with the symposium. Dr. Ann Cooper, Digital Archivist at the UTA Special Collections, discussed best practices for managing research data.

Peace Ossom Williamson also presented ideas for managing research data in a research-collaborative environment. Dr. Brenda Davis and Dr. Kelly Visnak (next image) led an engaging discussion about research misconduct involving collaboration. Dr. Visnak invited participants to become involved in the decision-making process by asking them to "What would you do?" in the case of suspicion about research misconduct.

Francis L. Macrina, PhD

Francis L.  Macrina is the Edward Myers Professor of Dentistry and Vice President for Research and Innovation at Virginia Commonwealth University. Over his career, Dr. Macrina has been a distinguished member of the VCU faculty serving as researcher, professor, department chair, Interim Director of the VCU Massey Cancer Center, and Director of the VCU Philips Institute for Oral Health Research.  His research on the molecular pathogenesis of infectious diseases was supported continuously by the National Institutes of Health for over 30 years. He was appointed as Vice President for Research in 2005, and named Vice President for Research and Innovation in 2014.   He has published over 120 scholarly papers as well as a widely-used textbook on research ethics which is now in its fourth edition.    In 2014 he was appointed to a 4 year term of service on the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity, a federal advisory committee that addresses biosecurity and dual use research issues.
