MAVERICK CLUB TOPS GOAL. The Maverick Club grew by 250 members and surpassed its fundraising goal during a campaign that ended in June. A group of 56 volunteers spearheaded the drive. More than $75,000 was raised, with each dollar going to scholarships. Danny Griffin recruited 33 members and was the top individual fundraiser at more than $13,000. For his efforts, he received an expenses-paid trip to San Diego for the UT Arlington-San Diego men’s basketball game in December. Griffin and his “A-Team” raised more than $17,000, earning them a trip to the Nov. 23 men’s basketball game at Oklahoma State in Stillwater.

CARLON JOINS NATA HALL OF FAME. Athletics Director Pete Carlon was among five certified athletic trainers inducted into the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame in June. Carlon became the head athletics trainer at UT Arlington in 1981. He served in that role and as assistant or associate athletics director beginning in 1984 until he was named director of athletics in 1996. He is a member of the Southwest Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame and is serving a two-year term as president of the Southland Conference.

MEN WIN ALL-SPORTS TITLE. UT Arlington earned its third consecutive Southland Conference men’s all-sports trophy during the 2004-05 academic year. The Mavericks tallied 55.5 points and scored top-three finishes in golf (first), tennis (second) and indoor track (third) to edge Sam Houston State (55.0 points). The men have won the all-sports trophy six times. The women were fourth this year, with top finishes in tennis (first), basketball (co-champs with Louisiana-Monroe) and volleyball (third).

TAYLOR NAMED TOP SLC TRACK ATHLETE. Senior Ivorita Taylor was named the 2005 Hibernia Bank/Southland Conference Women’s Outdoor Track Student-Athlete of the Year in June. The award goes to an individual in each conference sport who achieves excellence in academics, athletics and community/campus service. Taylor, a business major with a 4.0 grade average, took gold at the SLC Outdoor in the 800 meters with a time of 2:11.95. The native of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, finished first in the 800 meters at the J.D. Martin Invitational in Norman, Okla., and fifth at the College Station Relays in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:53.85.

LOVE NEW ATHLETICS DIRECTOR AT ARIZONA STATE. Former volleyball coach Lisa Love has been named athletics director for men’s and women’s sports at Arizona State University. From 1982-88, Love led the Mavericks to a 199-78 record. She was national Coach of the Year in 1988 when UT Arlington went 30-4 and fell one win shy of the Final Four. After leaving UT Arlington, she was head volleyball coach at the University of Southern California for 10 years before moving into administration. She is a member of UT Arlington’s Athletic Hall of Honor.

MAVERICK NOTES. Rayla J. Allison, Debbie Garcia and Brenda Marshall were honored by the Athletics Alumni Chapter in July at the group’s inaugural “playitforward” event. … A school-record 64 UT Arlington student-athletes were named to the 2005 Southland Conference Academic Honor Roll released in June. … Quinchun Carey finished first in the Southland Conference long jump and qualified for the men’s NCAA Championship meet. … Three players were selected in the Major League Baseball draft in June — pitcher Jake Baxter by Detroit, pitcher Grant Varnell by San Diego and outfielder Hunter Warrick by Houston. … Former baseball players Ryan Roberts and Daniel Ortmeier played for the Northern Division in the Class AA Eastern League all-star game in July. Ortmeier was a September call-up for the San Francisco Giants. … Pitcher Mike Snapp played for the Fort Worth Cats during the summer. … Josh Cohen was named assistant athletic trainer in August. … Ex-Maverick Derrick Obasohan signed a one-year contract to play in the Belgian Basketball League next summer. … The nationally ranked doubles team of Sandy Farquharson and Niels Buksik advanced to the round of 32 after receiving an at-large bid to the 2005 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships in May. … Mishael Bertrand, assistant coach and former track standout, finished sixth in the women’s 800 meters at the U.S. Track and Field Championships in June.
