FABULOUS FACULTY. Computer science and engineering Professor Diane Cook won the Outstanding Research Achievement award, and psychology Professor William Ickes won the Distinguished Record of Research Achievement award at the annual spring faculty meeting. Rebecca Deen, assistant professor of political science, received the Chancellor's Council Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Grace Esimai, a senior lecturer in information systems and operations management, received the Provost's Award for Excellence in Teaching. ...

POPULAR SCIENCE. The 2002 ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair, hosted by the College of Science, was the largest science and engineering fair ever held in Texas. The event drew approximately 2,800 participants from around the state. More than 900 contestants competed for $200,000 in scholarships and other awards. Five of the scholarships went to future UTA students. ...

BUILDING QUALITY. UTA's Center for Nanostructure Materials and Quantum Device Fabrication has received an Outstanding Building award from American School and University magazine. The structure, which formerly housed the University Bookstore, opened as the NanoFab Lab in October 2000 and includes a 10,000-square-foot clean room, offices, classrooms and conference spaces. ...

'HORN OF PLENTY. The Shorthorn, UTA's student newspaper, won 121 national and regional awards in the 2001-02 academic year. The Columbia Scholastic Press Association named The Shorthorn one of the top six newspapers in the country. The paper also was named best non-daily college newspaper by the Region 8 chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and best daily newspaper by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors. ...

TEJANO SPOKEN HERE. Thanks to a grant from the Texas State Library and Archives' TexTreasures program, 77 recorded interviews with Tejano leaders will soon be accessible to the public. The grant partially funds the Tejano Voices project, which will produce catalog records and digital files of the interviews conducted by political science Associate Professor Jose Angel Gutierrez. The recordings and transcripts are housed in the Special Collections Division of the UTA Libraries. ...

MAG NO RAG. UTA Magazine was one of three university periodicals recently honored for overall excellence by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. Judging was based on the spring/summer 2001, fall 2001 and winter 2002 issues and considered all aspects of the magazine, including writing, photography and design. The competition encompassed universities from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas and New Mexico. ...

TALKING TRASH. The National Wildlife Federation has ranked UTA as one of the nation's top 20 universities for recycling. The University recycles paper, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, ink and laser printer cartridges and other materials. UTA recycled 350 tons of paper and 500 pounds of aluminum last year. Paper recycling represents a cost savings of about $28,000 annually.
