Overcoming adversity

Orlando Carrillo Maffei, a star student-athlete at UTA who has overcome great adversity in his life, was profiled in a Star-Telegram story. Maffei graduated last week with a master’s degree in construction management. He played with the Movin’ Mavs wheelchair basketball team.

Cancer trap

UTA bioengineer Liping Tang has invented an implantable medical device that attracts and kills circulating cancer cells, the Star-Telegram, KXAS NBC 5, KLIF 570 AM, Houston’s KHOU CBS 11, Austin’s KVUE ABC 24, WTNZ Fox 43 in Knoxville, Tenn., Brinkwire, Medical Design Technology and many other websites reported. The cancer trap can be used for early diagnosis and treatment of metastasized cancer. UTA has patented the device in Europe.

Testing water

UTA scientists gathered skin swabs and water samples Tuesday in Ponder, where some residents have complained of burning, itching rashes after exposure to their tap water, KLIF 570 AM reported. UTA chemistry professor Kevin Schug and consultant Zac Hildenbrand manage UTA’s Collaborative Laboratories for Environmental Analysis and Remediation, or CLEAR lab, which performed the analysis.

Sexual harassment

Research by UTA’s James Campbell Quick and M. Ann McFadyen in 2017 was cited in the May issue of Monitor on Psychology in an article titled "Sexual harassment on campus." Quick, a UTA management professor, and McFadyen, an associate professor of management, collaborated on a paper titled "Sexual Harassment: Have we made any progress?" in the Journal of Occupational Health, Psychology.

Healthcare innovation

Dallas innovation was highlighted during a panel discussion on healthcare, Dallas Innovates reported. UTA was mentioned in the article as one of the major research universities in North Texas.

Implementation time

Allan Saxe, UTA associate professor of political science, said results from the upcoming meeting between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un would take considerable time to implement after the meeting happens, WBAP 820 AM reported.

Wings start

UTA’s College Park Center was featured in a Dallas Morning News story listing five things one has to know about the Dallas Wings as the 2018 WNBA season tips off soon. The Wings play their home games at College Park Center.

Alumna welcomed

LaShonda Putman has been welcomed into the International Nurses Association, PR News Channel reported. Putnam earned her bachelor’s degree in nursing from UTA.
