Brent Sasley, associate professor of political science in UTA’s College of Liberal Arts, provided live analysis on KRLD 1080 AM about President Trump’s pending announcement recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital and plans to move the U.S. embassy there. Sasley said while Trump likely feels this is the right thing to do to show Israel is a friend to America, the move could spark violence.
Russia's hybrid warfare
Patryk Babiracki, UTA associate professor of history, said the Kremlin has employed a new “hybrid warfare,” where all government and private resources can be mobilized to advance Russia’s goals, Medium.com reported. The story referred to a piece Babiracki wrote for The Washington Post.
Power of zinc
Zui Pan, UTA assistant professor of nursing, was featured in the India-based UdaipurTimes.com in an article about the power of zinc. Pan’s recent research found zinc helps slow down or even stop the growth of esophageal cancer.
Mitochondria research
UTA researchers have identified proteins in a signaling pathway in mammals that help mitochondria recover from stress, PublicNow.com reported. The discovery could pave the way for new treatments of cancer and some neurological diseases. Mark Pellegrino, UTA assistant professor of biology, was lead author.
Sexual harassment
Ann McFadyen, a UTA associate professor of strategic management, said sexual harassment has brought on bouts of depression, anxiety, stress and more in-depth psychological problems for victims, Health Day, WebMD and MedicineNet reported.
Professor honored
The American Chemical Society awarded Kevin Schug the J. Calvin Giddings Award for Excellence in Education, LCGC chromatographyonline.com reported. Schug is UTA’s Shimadzu Distinguished Professor of Analytical Chemistry and director of the CLEAR lab. Schug also contributed to chromatographyonline.com’s LCGC Blog with a post about the cannabis industry.
Flood mapping
UTA is working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to improve flood warning and relief, reported phys.org. According to the story, Nick Fang, assistant professor of civil engineering in UTA’s College of Engineering, received a contract to help the Corps of Engineers improve its watershed mapping capabilities.
Groundwater research
Research conducted by UTA shows harmful bacteria levels in groundwater near hydraulic fracking sites in Texas, reported The Texas Standard. The research was led by Kevin Schug, UTA’s Shimadzu Distinguished Professor of Analytical Chemistry, and Zac Hildebrand, major contributor to UTA’s CLEAR lab.
Nagy appointed
Lisa Nagy has been named vice president for student affairs at The University of Texas at Arlington after a comprehensive, nationwide search, PublicNow.com reported.
Basketball season
The University of Northern Iowa hosts UTA in men's basketball on Thursday in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the Cedar Falls Courier reported. The matchup will pit UTA, ranked No. 2 among mid-majors by CollegeInsider.com, against UNI, which is ranked No. 12 in the same poll. The Lady Mavs face Kansas State tonight in Manhattan, Kansas, according to The Mercury.
Parade grand marshal
UTA men’s basketball head coach Scott Cross will be the grand marshal of Arlington’s annual Holiday Lights Parade, reported publicnow.com. The parade begins at 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 9, at Lampe and South Streets in Arlington.
Alumnus appointed
Agios Pharmaceuticals Inc., a leader in the field of cellular metabolism to treat cancer and rare genetic diseases, announced the appointment of Jacqualyn Fouse to its board of directors, StreetInsider.com and First World Pharma reported. Fouse earned a bachelor and master of arts in economics and a doctorate in finance from UTA.
