Infrared light help
Hanli Liu, a UTA bioengineering professor, is developing a technology that will map and image the effects of infrared light shone on the human brain, Medical Xpress.com reported.
ClaimBuster research
A team of UTA researchers and their collaborators at Duke University recently received a three-year $500,000 National Science Foundation grant to expand ClaimBuster, a tool they developed to verify facts reported in the media, Scienmag reported. The group is led by Chengkai Li, UTA associate professor of computer science and engineering. Mark Tremayne, an assistant professor of communication, also is on the team.
Open education
George Siemens, executive director of UTA’s Learning Innovation Tech Lab, has teamed up with David Wiley, co-founder and chief academic officer at OER company Lumen Learning, to lead a free course that aims to introduce graduate students to open education, EdSurge News reported.
Smart city
Duane Dimos, UTA vice president of research, was quoted in a Dallas Innovates story about Fort Worth’s efforts to become a smart city. Dimos, who is working with Fort Worth, Dallas and Arlington to incorporate smart elements into their operations, said tech and data initiatives can enhance life in a city.
Solar eclipse
KXTX Telemundo 39 and KRLD 1080 AM reported on the solar eclipse activities at UTA’s Planetarium.
Low debt
A study released by LendEdu shows that UTA has one of the 10 lowest student debt averages in Texas, The Dallas Morning News reported. The study analyzed data from Peterson’s financial aid survey of more more than 1,000 institutions.
Bike share
UTA will launch a bike share program on Sept. 7, KXAS NBC 5 reported. Students, faculty and staff will pay a $25 annual fee to participate in the program.
Speaker series
The Downtown Arlington Management Corporation published an article about the 10th anniversary season of the Maverick Speakers Series. Over the past decade, the series has attracted numerous prominent speakers, including journalist Thomas Friedman and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin.
Repurposed industrial space
Mark Lamster, UTA associate professor in practice of architecture, co-wrote a review in The Dallas Morning News about the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Lamster, who is the newspaper’s architecture critic, said the museum’s use of a repurposed industrial space could be a model for Dallas.
Alumna debuts book
Irene Okoronkwo-Obika has written “Chisom the Champ,” a children’s book about childhood bullying, eurweb.com reported. Okoronkwo-Obika holds a doctoral degree in nursing practice with a concentration in psychiatric mental health from UTA.
Alumnus to teach course
Former Fort Worth Mayor Hugh Parmer has joined the faculty of Tarleton State University’s Department of Social Science, The Flash Today reported. Parmer holds a master’s degree from UTA.
