Mavericks Chase WAC Championship
UTA men’s basketball closes a stellar season
The UTA men’s basketball team concluded its season by defying expectations every step of the way, ultimately battling its way to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament Final, facing No. 1-seeded Grand Canyon University.
The Mavericks got there after one of their most intense games to date, defeating No. 2-seeded Tarleton State 87-84 thanks to a game-winning three-pointer by Brandyn Talbot with just 3.3 seconds left to play.
“This team has been through a lot this year, and we stuck around and gutted it out,” head coach KT Turner says.
In the final matchup, the Mavericks ultimately fell to Grand Canyon 89-74. The loss ended an eight-game winning streak, the team’s longest since 2017. Despite the loss, the game capped a 20-win season for the team, another feat that hadn’t been reached since 2017. Ultimately, the Mavericks finished third in the WAC during the regular season, a stellar showing for a team that was picked to finish eighth in the Preseason Coaches Poll.
“I’m proud of the guys for how they fought all season,” Turner says.
