The new semester has begun at The University of Texas at Arlington, and the fun continued Tuesday night at the Maverick FRIENDzy event.

Patrick Jackson, assistant director of transition programs and services at UTA, was there to greet Mavericks and help rally excitement for the beginning of the school year.

“It’s great to focus on students as they transition from year one all the way to graduation, and I love playing a role in that to help Mavericks navigate,” Jackson said. “I hope that everyone feels a sense of community and makes connections that turn into friendships as we kick off the school year.”

Maverick FRIENDzy was like the ultimate icebreaker, with students participating in team-building and interactive programs. The event prompted students meet to new people through collaborative activities that promoted campus unity and school spirit.

“The first week of classes, with Maverick Stampede going on, is such a great time to take advantage of,” said Zaimah Ahmed, a junior studying business. “It’s important to spend some time having fun because school and studying will stress you out eventually.”

Nathalie Ornelas said she didn’t want to miss out on any of the events—especially since it’s her senior year at UTA. Her advice to freshmen is to get involved.

“Make a friend in every class and join a club on campus; it’s definitely worth it,” she said.

Mavericks bonded over pizza and games while mingling with students with similar interests. The Division of Student Affairs hosted the event, geared toward bringing Mavericks out of their comfort zones to foster new friendships.

Mavericks like Nneka Ogboi were friendly and talkative, laughing off the little bit of rain falling on the FRIENDzy.

“I’m looking forward to making new friends this semester—and passing my classes, of course,” Ogboi said.
