Mavericks return to campus for in-person orientations
The University of Texas at Arlington will offer face-to-face orientations for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Both new and transfer students for the upcoming summer and fall semesters will get to choose from in-person and virtual options.
David Duvall, director of Maverick Orientation and Transition Programs, said the events will follow all University guidelines—such as wearing masks, maintaining social distancing throughout the sessions and limiting the number of students at each event.
“For our students to come in and feel like they’re part of this Maverick community, we really feel like the face-to-face opportunity is going to be helpful for them to build connections and learn about what to expect throughout their UTA experience,” he said.
This year, freshmen will not be required to stay overnight for their two-day orientation. New Mavericks will be able to leave at the end of the first day and return to campus the following day. Those who want to stay overnight in residence halls can still do so.
“I’m really glad that we are offering both virtual and face-to-face options,” said Alexandra Rojas, a senior and Transfer Orientation Leader. “All of the orientation leaders having been working so hard to make sure that new Mavericks will get the information they need and make the sessions engaging and fun.”
Rojas came to UT Arlington in spring 2019 as a transfer student from Tarrant County College to study advertising and broadcasting. Soon after, she joined the Maverick Orientation and Transition Programs. She won Outstanding Undergraduate Student Leader at the 2021 National Orientation Directors Association regional conference for her dedication to new students, her development of video content for virtual orientation and her passion and excitement for UTA.
“Being recognized for what I’ve done with New Maverick Orientation made me realize that it really does have an impact on the team and especially with the students we serve,” she said. “Being able to engage with other students, classmates and professors is what makes college memorable, so I’m excited for this incoming group to begin their college experience with some normalcy.”
The first in-person sessions will start at the end of the month. More information about orientation, including frequently asked questions and how to register, is available on the New Maverick Orientation website.
