As the new school year begins across the country, schools face increasing responsibility not only to ensure students’ academic success but also to address the growing mental health concerns of today’s youth. Social workers in schools play a critical role in bridging these gaps, providing essential support that helps students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. But what exactly can a social worker do in a school setting?
What Can I Do as a School Social Worker?
School social work is a specialized field that combines social work with educational and psychological knowledge to support students, families, and school staff. Here’s how school social workers contribute to the school environment:
- Providing Mental Health Support and Counseling
One of the most important roles of a school social worker is providing mental health support. This includes individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and developing prevention programs. With rising levels of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues among students, school social workers are on the front lines, offering guidance, resources, and a listening ear to those in need.
- Supporting Academic Achievement
School social workers work closely with teachers, administrators, and parents to help students overcome barriers to learning.
