  • DID YOU SUFFER FROM ISSUES WITH THE AUGUST ADMINISTRATION OF THE LSAT EXAM?

LSAC has issued a statement that may bring you comfort as you deal with retakes this weekend and the months to come.  It appears that things will be getting better.

In a normal test administration, it’s not uncommon to have a few “N” codes, due to a power outage or severe weather or individual technical issues, but the August test was not a normal administration. As we all know, we had an very large and completely unacceptable number of August test takers who started their tests but were unable to complete due to technical or proctoring issues. We worked with Prometric to identify and fix their issues, and the August retest went much more smoothly. We continue to work with Prometric to ensure that we have a successful September test.

For August test takers who weren’t able to complete their test during the first weekend, we gave them the option of retesting in August or moving to September or a later LSAT or receiving a refund if they didn’t want to retake the test. Those who chose to retest received their scores on August 30 (assuming they had completed an LSAT Writing sample). Those who moved to September or later or who chose to receive a refund received the “N” code. Again, only test takers who actually got to the point of starting the test in August received an N code. Test takers who re-tested in August would not see an N code because they almost certainly received a score on the re-test.

Given the larger number of test takers that received the “N” code for August, we will include a short note in their Law School Report explaining exactly what the “N” means, making it clear it was due to technical and/or proctoring issues that were no fault of the student. We hope this will reassure any affected students that any school they apply to will understand what the “N” means.

I would also add that the “N” code is intended to be completely neutral to the test taker – with respect to the August test, it does not count against any of the testing limits, it does not count against their fee waiver if they have one, it does not count against their score preview, etc.   – Kyle McEntee, LSAC Senior Director for PreLaw Engagement
