Book Chapter Co-Authored by English faculty available soon
Co-written by Amy Hodges, Johansen Quijano, Timothy Ponce, Bethany Shaffer, and Vince Sosko, the chapter “Design Justice in Technical and Professional Communication: Equity for Teaching Faculty and Graduate Student Instructors” examines how course designers can create more equitable conditions for faculty in contingent positions who primarily teach introductory courses in technical and professional writing. An analysis of their interview data shows that teaching faculty and graduate student instructors new to teaching technical writing leveraged their agency as instructors and their own networks of technical and professional writing practitioners, although they also expressed the need for more support specific to the field.
Published in Amplifying Voices in UX: Balancing Design and User Needs in Technical Communication by SUNY Press, our faculty members' work is the lead chapter in a section on technology and user experience in labor, social, and political movements in technical and professional communication. The editors and anonymous peer reviewers expressed high praise for the chapter, which they described as “a fantastic piece that addresses a difficult topic with research to support programmatic concerns.” They also identified this research as “offer[ing] a unique contribution to the field’s literature on imbalances/inequalities for contingent faculty and shed[ding] light on a related issue for teaching UX skills in the introductory technical writing course.”
