The Disability Studies Minor consists of a total of six courses (18 credit hours). However, students are not limited to six courses and are encouraged to take more DS core and DS elective courses as their interests evolve.
Students take two required courses, both which fall near the end of their time in the program: DS/HIST 3307 “History of Disability,” taught by DS Minor Director Dr. Sarah Rose, and DS 4395 “Disability Studies Internship,” which is supervised by DS Minor Director Dr. Sarah Rose and DS Minor Advisor Mikila Salazar along with students’ site supervisors.
In addition, students are required to take 2 DS core courses. Offerings currently include “Disability & Social Work,” “Disability in Mass Media,” “Universal Design,” “Adapted P.E. & Sport,” “Disability & Comics,” “Disability & Art,” “Disability & Work, “Cyborgs & Prosthetics” and “Disability Studies: Fat Studies,” with “Disability Ethics” launching in the 2022-2023 academic year.
Students also take 2 DS Elective courses for the minor; alternatively, they can opt to take additional core courses. Some of our popular DS electives are “American Sign Language (ASL),” “Medical Humanities,” “Sport & Society,” “Diversity in Organizations,” “Robots, Digital Humanities & Theatre,” “Issues in American Healthcare through Film."
