Taylor Kelley1. What made you choose UTA’s Special Education Program?

I chose UTA’s Special Education Program because it provides a unique opportunity to deepen my knowledge and skills in a field that I am deeply passionate about. As both a mother of children with disabilities and a special education paraprofessional, I am committed to fostering inclusive educational environments. This program offers not only the academic rigor I seek but also the practical tools necessary to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students with diverse learning needs. Earning this degree will have a profound impact on both my personal and professional growth, equipping me to become an advocate and leader in special education.

2: What are you enjoying most about Project READY - I.C?

What I am enjoying most about Project READY – I.C. is the quality of the coursework. The program offers research-based content that deepens my understanding of special education practices in ways I have not encountered elsewhere. Each course challenges me to engage with current issues critically and equips me with the tools needed to support diverse learners effectively. 3. What made you want to become a special educator?

My decision to become a special educator was inspired by my personal journey as a parent. When my oldest son turned four and prepared to enter the public school system, I became aware—through parent groups—of the potential challenges families often face within special education. This motivated me to become a special education paraprofessional, as I wanted to gain firsthand experience and insight into the system. Through this role, I discovered a profound passion for working with students of all abilities and supporting their growth. This experience not only deepened my understanding of the field but also confirmed that special education is my true calling and professional purpose.

4. How has the grant assisted with financial barriers in getting your master’s degree?Taylor Kelly and her two sons.

The grant has significantly alleviated the financial barriers associated with pursuing a master’s degree. Without this support, obtaining an advanced degree would not have been feasible, given the financial demands of raising two children with disabilities and working within the public education system. The grant has made it possible for me to focus on my academic and professional development without the added stress of financial constraints. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity, as it is enabling me to achieve my educational goals and advance my career in special education.

5. What do you like about the online nature of the program?

What I appreciate most about the online nature of this program is the flexibility it offers. The ability to manage coursework around the demands of daily life allows me to maintain a balance between my academic, professional, and personal responsibilities. This flexibility is especially valuable given life’s unpredictability, as it enables me to progress through the program at a pace that ensures both effective learning and personal well-being. The online format empowers me to stay engaged and succeed without compromising the quality of my work or my other commitments.

6. How has what you learned in the program so far assisted with your practices in the classroom?

The program has significantly deepened my understanding of the qualifying categories of special education, enhancing my ability to better serve students with diverse needs. I have gained valuable knowledge in developing high-quality components of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), ensuring they are supporting meaningful student progress. I also now have a greater understanding of the laws that protect the rights of individuals with disabilities, which enables me to be a more informed advocate for my students. Lastly, the coursework has equipped me with research-based instructional strategies, allowing me to deliver high-quality, evidence-based practices that promote student success in the classroom.
