Black History Month – Draper Wynston
The UTA College of Business celebrates Black History Month by recognizing the success and accomplishments of our Black Alumni. Today we recognize Draper Wynston, Actor & Founder of 3i Creative Media Group and CEO of Vanguard Affinity Group Public Relations. Draper graduated in 2004 with a bachelor of business administration in marketing.
Since graduating from UTA, what has been your greatest accomplishment?
I guest starred on CW Network’s TV show “Walker”, and I won Best Guest Actor at the 12th Annual ISA Awards for that role. My other greatest accomplishment is earning my master's degree.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Building from scratch, I started a corporate job after I graduated from UTA. I decided to become an actor because of different life circumstances, and that led me to become an entrepreneur. As an entrepreneur, I used the knowledge obtained while at UTA, specifically the College of Business. The lessons I learned are part of why I am a successful entrepreneur and award-winning actor.
Do you take part in any initiatives, community service, or projects that make you proud?
I speak at different high school theatre programs, helping and encouraging them to pursue their passion for the arts. I also own a company that employs actors as well, this year I am widening my focus to college students.
What advice would you give to young black students entering higher education?
The advice I would give to young black students would be to turn their passion into a career. You will not feel like you are working. You will enjoy every day; it will be challenging, but when you see your growth, it is worth it. I am an advocate for higher education because I use everything I learned in my major today. With my acting career and my company, I can apply what my professors taught me without wasting years trying to get the experience. I believe it put me ahead.
What goals do you have for yourself or your career?
I plan to continue my career as an actor. My goal is to become mentioned in conversations with exceptional black actors like Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, and Don Cheadle; planning to be impactful as they are. As for my business, we want to become the premier public relations firm in Dallas.
Did you feel welcome at UTA? What made you feel included?
I loved every moment I spent on UTA's campus. I played basketball so I was able to experience some fun times. I felt very welcome. I pledged to Delta Sigma Pi (Zeta Mu Chapter), Business Fraternity, and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. (Iota Alpha Chapter). I loved every moment. My professors were easy to talk to. They wanted us to pass if we showed an effort. The time I spent and the people I met were memorable.
What traditions do you celebrate or honor during black history month?
During Black History Month, I learn more about the accomplishments of African Americans. I love learning new things about accomplishments and becoming inspired to make great strides just like they did.
What are any goals you have for the black community?
I plan to continue uplifting the black community positively. We are making some amazing strides in different areas and should be shown in a positive light. I will also continue to provide opportunities for others to become successful.
Please share three fun facts about yourself:
- I love fountains, the architecture of them, how relaxing they are, and more.
- I don't like playing video games. They seem like a waste of time.
- I love traveling and seeing different parts of the world!
