Athletics Hall of Honor inducts 4 members

Pitcher Jeff Burrow, defensive back Mike Barnes, track and field All-American Jenny Hockett and softball player and coach Rayla Allison are the 2009 inductees to the Department of Athletics Hall of Honor.

While pitching for the Mavericks from 1988-91, Burrow set career records for wins (27), innings pitched (333), complete games (25) and games started (51). In 1991 he became one of seven pitchers in UT Arlington history to win 10 games. A second-team All-Southland Conference selection as a sophomore, Burrow led the team in innings pitched and complete games his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.

Barnes was a three-year letterman (1964-66) at defensive back for Arlington State College (now UT Arlington). He holds school records for interceptions in a career (13), a season (eight) and a game (three). He continued his football career after college and was selected in the fourth round of the NFL draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. He played in 17 games and recovered two fumbles for the Cardinals.

Hockett (1990-93) is a nine-time Southland Conference champion and holds UT Arlington records in the long jump and 55-meter dash and is a member of the school-record 400-meter relay team. In 1993 she earned All-America honors after an eighth-place finish in the women’s javelin and 100 meters. As a junior and senior, she earned the SLC Outstanding Field Performance award for the long jump and javelin.

Allison was a standout catcher from 1972-75 and coached the softball team from 1984-89, compiling a 189-152-2 record. She was a member of the first U.S. team to compete in China in 1979 and played on the Connecticut Falcons women’s professional team that won four consecutive world championships (1976-79). Allison is a former executive director of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
