ARLINGTON HONORS WHEELCHAIR ATHLETE

Nov. 2, 2007, was Aaron Gouge Day in Arlington. Gouge, a sophomore Movin' Mavs wheelchair basketball player, earned National Wheelchair Basketball Association All-American first-team and conference MVP honors last year. In August he helped Team USA win a gold medal at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. The team qualified for the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS RECOGNIZED

Seniors Torie Dacus and Ellen Murray earned first-team all-Southland Conference honors, while senior Emily Nedderman was named to the second team. The Mavericks finished second in the SLC's West Division during the regular season last fall but lost in the first round of the conference tournament. UT Arlington posted a 19-11 overall record.

THREE NAMED TO PRESEASON SQUADS

Senior Jermaine Griffin was named to the first team of the Southland Conference preseason men's basketball team. For the women, senior Maryann Abanobi was named to the first team and senior Tiffeny Riles to the second team. The SLC basketball tournaments will be held in the Houston area for the second straight year. The women's championship game is March 15, and the men's final is March 16.

PENCE AMONG TOP NL ROOKIES

Houston Astros outfielder Hunter Pence finished third in National League Rookie-of-the-Year voting last season. In 108 games, the former UT Arlington standout batted .321 with 30 doubles, 17 home runs, 69 runs batted in and 11 stolen bases. He was considered a front-runner for Rookie of the Year until a wrist injury sidelined him for more than a month. Pence earned all-Southland Conference honors as a Maverick in 2003 and 2004 and ranks third all-time in batting with a .371 average.

CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS FINISH STRONG

The men's team finished third and the women's team fifth in the Southland Conference cross country championships in November. For the men, senior Jody Broccoli-Hickey, junior Idilio Campos and sophomore Ozie Hood earned all-conference, placing sixth, eighth and ninth, respectively. Freshman Annabelle Everitt led the women with a 12th-place finish, followed by senior Carranda Mose at 13th and sophomore Ida Landgraff at 16th.

TWO JOIN SPORTS STAFF

Alumnus Roy Rudewick has been named head athletic trainer. He previously was head trainer at Arlington's Bowie High School. Alumnus Darrin Scheid has been named assistant sports information director. He is a former sportswriter for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and a recent resident of Paris, France.

RANGERS SIGN ROBERTS

The Texas Rangers have signed former UT Arlington infielder Ryan Roberts to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Selected by Toronto in the 2003 amateur draft, he spent five seasons with the Blue Jays before becoming a free agent in October. He played parts of the last two seasons in the major leagues but spent most of 2007 with Triple-A Syracuse. His first big-league hit was a home run at Yankee Stadium. Roberts led the Southland Conference in hitting with a .422 average in 2003 and is UT Arlington's career batting leader with a .393 average.
