Robert H. Arnold, 66, Oct. 2 in Fort Worth. Mr. Arnold earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering from Arlington State College (now UTA) in 1960. He retired from Thomas Systems in Fort Worth where he was vice president of sales.

Ashutosh Atkekar, 23, Aug. 23 in Houston. Mr. Atkekar was from Pune, Maharashtra, India, a graduate student majoring in biomedical engineering. He worked as a chemistry research graduate assistant.

William Vance “Bill” Barnes, 80, Aug. 24 in Waco. Mr. Barnes earned an associate’s degree from North Texas Agricultural College (now UTA) in 1943. He served in the Air Force during World War II and after the war earned his bachelor’s degree at The University of Texas at Austin. He worked as a salesman for Burroughs Adding Machine Co. in San Antonio and Fort Worth and then spent 25 years as a salesman for Hart Graphics while living in Waco. He retired in 1989.

Tye Hill Barnett Jr., 58, July 28 in Irving. Mr. Barnett earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from UTA in 1969. He was a district circulation manager for the Star-Telegram and The Dallas Morning News before owning and managing several restaurants, most recently The Flame Steakhouse in Euless.

Billy C. Collins, 81, Oct. 3 in Arlington. Lt. Col. Collins received his associate’s degree in industrial aeronautical engineering from North Texas Agricultural College (now UTA) in 1943. He enlisted as a pilot in the Air Force that year and commanded missions over Germany. As a career Air Force pilot, he also served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired from the Air Force in 1971.

David Robert Coover, 54, Sept. 8 in Fort Worth. Mr. Coover earned two business degrees from UTA—a bachelor’s in 1973 and a master’s in 1979. He worked in the finance industry and for the Small Business Administration. Most recently, he managed a RadioShack store in Stephenville.

Ronald Wayne DeJulius, 57, Sept. 11 in Dallas. Mr. DeJulius received his master’s degree in social work from UTA in 1989. He worked with Parkland Hospital clinics serving children.

Debora Eikenbary, 45, Sept. 29 in Fort Worth. Ms. Eikenbary received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from UTA in 1995 and worked as a registered nurse in case management at John Peter Smith Hospital.

Jimm Foster, 67, Oct. 12 in Dallas. Mr. Foster received his bachelor’s degree in history from Arlington State College (now UTA) in 1967. He served in the Navy and was a real estate agent in Boulder, Colo., before moving back to Texas, where he was a tax appraiser for the city of Dallas. In the 1990s, he joined the Dallas Public Library as curator of photos. He retired from the library in 2002.

Virginia Lynn Furlich, 40, July 23 in Grand Prairie. Ms. Furlich earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from UTA in 1999 and became a certified public accountant. She worked at American Radiology Associates in Dallas.

William Neil “Bill” Garrison, 81, Oct. 31 in Fort Worth. Mr. Garrison earned an associate’s degree from North Texas Agricultural College (now UTA) in 1942. After serving in the Army during World War II, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech and later received a law degree from Southern Methodist University. He was a partner in the Cook & Garrison law firm before forming Tarrant Title Insurance Co. in 1973. He was a three-term Fort Worth City Council member.

Jean Gilliam, 71, Oct. 8 in Fort Worth. Ms. Gilliam was retired from the UTA Bookstore. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at Granbury Medical Center and the Agriculture Extension Education Club of Hood County.

Gary Gwyn, 63, Aug. 2 in Irving. Mr. Gwyn earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Arlington State College (now UTA) in 1963. He served as city manager in Grand Prairie, Tyler, Edinburg and Canyon and was an assistant city manager in Fort Worth and Irving. He also was general manager of the Brazos River Authority.

Jacqueline “Jackie” Karnes Crabtree Hampton, 80, Oct. 18 in Denton, N.C. Ms. Hampton earned her associate’s degree from North Texas Agricultural College (now UTA) in 1944. She made a profession of rearing her two daughters and spent many years in Fort Worth before moving to North Carolina. While living in Fort Worth, she was a member of the Helping Hands Club at First United Methodist Church, the XYZ Club and the Westerners Club and served as a docent at Thistle Hill.

Charles B. Harrell, 63, July 11 in Tyler. Dr. Harrell earned his bachelor’s degree in English from UTA in 1967 and was a librarian with the UT System for 35 years, retiring in August 2003. He served as associate director of UTA Libraries from 1968 until 1990, when he was named library director at The University of Texas at Tyler, serving there until his retirement.

James Douglas Hatcher, 54, July 3 in Arlington. Mr. Hatcher was an engineer at TXU Electric Delivery, beginning his TXU career in 1969. He was a lead protection engineer for several years and attended night school and earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from UTA in 1988. He became an expert in his field, attaining the position of consulting engineer-relay with TXU.

Sara Lynn Hendrick, 89, Sept. 15 in Fort Worth. Ms. Hendrick last attended North Texas Agricultural College (now UTA) in 1933. She worked as a secretary in the water department office in Handley before meeting her future husband, Jasper, at NTAC. She enjoyed traveling with Mr. Hendrick after his retirement. 

Bruce James Hutson, 58, Oct. 6 in Arlington. Mr. Hutson earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from UTA in 1969. He was president of the Interfraternity Council and a member of Phi Gamma Delta. An entrepreneur, he founded an aerospace fastener distribution company and was part owner of the Italian Villa restaurant. He also bred racehorses, including Private School.

Marney Collier Isbell, 84, Aug. 1 in Fort Worth. Dr. Isbell received his associate’s degree from North Texas Agricultural College (now UTA) in 1940, then earned a medical degree from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He was in the Medical Corps during World War II and served the community as a family physician for more than 50 years.

James “Jake” Knight Johnson, 63, Sept. 12 in Dallas. Mr. Johnson received his bachelor’s degree in political science from UTA in 1965. He was assistant district attorney in Dallas for 10 years before going into private practice in 1980. He was later appointed a municipal court judge in Desoto and served for 10 years.

Timothy Kissinger, 47, July 5 in Houston. Mr. Kissinger received his bachelor’s degree from UTA in 1988. For years, he worked as a pipe organ builder in Fort Worth. He was an ingenious craftsman, dabbling in plastic injection molding, metal casting and foundry work, and building his own power tools.

James Wayne Lacy, 59, July 27 in Weatherford. Mr. Lacy earned two degrees from UTA—a bachelor’s in aerospace engineering in 1968 and a master’s in mechanical engineering in 1974. He was employed by LTV for 20 years and then went to work for General Dynamics, which became part of Lockheed Martin. He was a senior engineer at Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth.

Nancy Anne Lawrence, 47, July 18 in Fort Worth. Ms. Lawrence earned her bachelor’s degree in art from UTA in 1979. After graduation, she worked for the Humane Society for seven years, starting its first education program. Later, she worked as a crime specialist for the Fort Worth Police Department. After returning to school, she worked as a graphic artist for Adams Extract.

Scott A. McMillen, 32, Aug. 1 in Dallas. Mr. McMillen earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from UTA in 1996. After graduation, he began a career in mortgage banking and worked for Fieldstone Mortgage at the time of his death.

Denis William Morbitzer, 75, Oct. 10 in Fort Worth. Mr. Morbitzer earned his associate’s degree from Arlington State College (now UTA) in 1955 and then earned a bachelor’s degree from Texas Christian University. He worked for 35 years at Southwestern Petroleum until his retirement.

Estelle Bronstad Normand, 91, Aug. 3 in Fort Worth. Ms. Normand earned her associate’s degree from North Texas Agricultural College (now UTA) in 1934. While at NTAC, she was a member of Avolonte social sorority, now Zeta Tau Alpha. She also earned a degree from Texas Christian University. She was a member of the Fort Worth Woman’s Club.

Mary Ann Duppstadt Nunn, 87, Aug. 24 in Arlington. Ms. Nunn worked as a librarian at Arlington State College (now UTA) from 1954-56. She also worked at libraries in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York and at Ling-Temco-Vought Aircraft Co. in Dallas. She held degrees from Hood College in Frederick, Md., and the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Mary Lou Nunn, 53, Oct. 5 in Colleyville. Ms. Nunn received her bachelor’s degree in systems analysis from UTA in 1986. She had been a computer programmer and systems analyst with J.C. Penney since 1988.

Donald Joseph “Donny” Oltean, 21, Aug. 17 in Houston. Mr. Oltean was a junior business major at UTA and secretary of the Accounting Society. He was a 2001 graduate of Clear Lake High School in Houston.

Gerald R. Owens, 58, Oct. 16 in Fort Worth. Mr. Owens earned two bachelor’s degrees from UTA—one in business administration in 1972 and another in accounting in 1977. He worked as an accountant in the oil and gas industries for 20 years and then as an accountant in transportation.

Donald Ray Powell, 61, Aug. 24 in Fort Worth. Mr. Powell last attended Arlington State College (now UTA) in 1962. He was a Vietnam-era veteran and worked for years as an executive headhunter. Most recently, he had worked in job development, training and placements for the Tarrant County Workforce Commission.

Phala Mae Price, 83, Sept. 30 in Grand Prairie. Ms. Price worked in the E.H. Hereford University Center for 35 years before retiring in 1995; she then worked part time until 2000. She started as a custodian and later worked as an administrative assistant for reservations.

Mohamed Ali Rachid, 55, July 8 in Bedford. Mr. Rachid earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from UTA in 1997 and his master’s in 2000. He was a professor at The University of Texas at Austin and at Tarrant County College. Prior to earning his degrees, he worked for American Airlines for 25 years.

James Jackson Rogers, 73, Sept. 23 in Springtown. Mr. Rogers was a retired aerospace engineer. He earned his bachelor’s degree from UTA in 1968 and worked for 45 years with Lockheed Martin, retiring in 1999.

James “Jim” Ballantine St. Louis, 72, Sept. 26 in Shreveport, La. Dr. St. Louis practiced general dentistry in Fort Worth for 45 years. For the past 25 years, he commuted from Possum Kingdom Lake in Graford, indulging in his lifelong passion for fishing. He last attended Arlington State College (now UTA) in 1953, enrolling in the pre-dental program.

Morris E. Sanders, 61, July 16 in Arlington. Mr. Sanders earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from UTA in 1975. He served as an Arlington police officer and as a special agent for Union Pacific Railroad. A Navy veteran, he also served as president of the Arlington Police Association.

Thomas Neuman Walton, 50, July 5 in Arlington. Mr. Walton served with the Army Special Forces until 1979, when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He graduated from UTA with a B.B.A. in accounting in 1983 and worked as an auditor for the Defense Contract Audit Agency.

Norma Jean Williams, 58, Sept. 11 in Dallas. Dr. Williams had been a sociology professor at UTA since 1997. She previously taught at Texas A&M University. In 1990, she published a book, The Mexican-American Family: Tradition and Change, which is still used in university classes.
