Dalton Maroney and curious onlookers watch as an egg-toting aircraft designed by one of his students descends from the fourth floor inside the Fine Arts Building. The egg drop is an end-of-semester project for the art professor’s course on three-dimensional design. Students must construct a visually attractive vehicle that floats smoothly and lands softly enough to protect the egg. “We used to have a lot of crashes and few successes. Now it’s the other way around,” says Maroney, who’s not sure when the popular tradition began. Most of the aircraft are made of balsa wood and tissue paper.
