Susan English: Associate Director of Student Activities

Susan EnglishYears at UTA: 20
Education: B.S., St. Bonaventure University; M.A., Truman State University
Stopped: 1:05 p.m. March 30 on the University Center mall at the International Week Food Fair

What did you have to eat?
Borek from the Turkish Student Association, fried rice from the Laos Student Association and falafel and tabbouleh from the Middle Eastern Student Association.

Why do you think the food fair is so popular?
It’s a wonderful opportunity to sample foods from other cultures. This is the type of event that brings people together.

What does your job entail?
My main responsibilities are overseeing the Exploring Leadership component in the Department of Student Activities and advising EX.C.E.L. Campus Activities’ Lectures & Debates Committee.

What is EX.C.E.L. Campus Activities?
It’s the major student programming group at UTA. The acronym stands for Excellence in Campus Traditions, Entertainment & Arts and Lectures & Debates.

What do students gain from campus involvement?
We’re in the business of preparing campus leaders to be outstanding members of the community when they graduate. They can gain a wealth of personal and professional experience through leadership education and out-of-classroom opportunities.

Two UTA alumnae play on the Dallas Diamonds women’s professional football team (see p. 22). Would you ever play full-contact football?
I’m not personally interested in playing, although I can throw a mean spiral. It must take a special type of woman to play football because of all the contact. I can’t imagine getting tackled by someone wearing shoulder pads and a helmet.

What do you see as the keys to success for UTA?
We need strong leadership and must remain competitive in the college market, both locally and nationally. One way to stay competitive is by offering an environment in which students can thrive academically and socially. I feel we’re making great strides in both areas.
