Spaniolo at investiture ceremony

Talk of leadership and collaboration filled Texas Hall on April 12 as James D. Spaniolo became the first UTA president in 44 years to be officially installed during a formal investiture ceremony. Not since Jack Woolf in 1960 had a UTA president been vested at such an occasion. The President’s Investiture and Convocation for Academic Excellence also recognized more than 200 students for scholarly achievement. Remarks by President Emeritus Wendell H. Nedderman, Student Congress President Josh Warren and University of Texas System Chancellor Mark G. Yudof preceded the keynote address by Clifton R. Wharton Jr., former chancellor of the State University of New York System and president emeritus of Michigan State University. Following Dr. Wharton’s speech, U.T. System Regent Robert A. Estrada installed Spaniolo as the University’s seventh president and presented him with a medallion symbolizing the authority of the office. In his address to the 1,400 in attendance, President Spaniolo emphasized the importance of leadership through collaboration: “By partnering and collaborating with the world around us, we will meet the challenges that face us, tell a new story about UTA and make a brighter future for generations to come.”  To read the full text of the keynote and president’s addresses, visit www.uta.edu/president/investiture.
