Cole Anthony Brockett, 19, March 15 near Poteau, Okla. Mr. Brockett was a freshman at UTA, majoring in physics. He graduated from Dunbar High School in Fort Worth.

Jan Buchanan, 54, March 5 in Dallas. Ms. Buchanan was a social worker with Central Dallas Ministries and lived in Duncanville. She left the printing profession for social work in the late 1990s, earning two degrees from UTA, a bachelor's in 1996 and master's in 1998. She also worked for the Step Foundation, which recently merged with Central Dallas Ministries, and for New Beginnings Career Development.

James A. Cain, 82, March 20 in Plano. Mr. Cain earned his associate's degree from North Texas Agricultural College (now UTA) in 1943. He served in the Pacific during World War II and was a 36-year employee of ARCO. He devoted many hours volunteering with the Boy Scouts.

Ken "Hubcap" Carter, 60, Feb. 28 in Dallas. Mr. Carter was the radio voice of UTA football from 1976 to 1985. A radio veteran of 43 years, he was best known as an oldies disc jockey, hosting radio shows dedicated to music from the 1950s and '60s. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas Wesleyan University and taught broadcast journalism at both TWU and Texas Christian University.

Floyd Lee Cash Sr., 77, Feb. 22 in Arlington. Dr. Cash was a professor emeritus in the College of Engineering. He joined the engineering faculty in 1959 and was named chair of the Electrical Engineering Department in 1972. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma and his master's and Ph.D. degrees from U.T. Austin. He helped develop the two-year electrical engineering program at Arlington State College (now UTA) into the Electrical Engineering Department.

Harold D. Conner, 94, Nov. 19, 2003,  in Fort Worth. Mr. Conner retired in 1971 after a 47-year career with Southwestern Bell that included setting and climbing poles, repairing phones, working on the test board and serving as an estimate assigner. After his retirement, he earned an associate's degree from Tarrant County College and a bachelor's degree from UTA in 1981.

Kristy Gawrychowski, 23, Feb. 5 in Fort Worth. Ms. Gawrychowski was a senior psychology major at UTA. She was from Orlando, Fla., where she attended the University of Central Florida before transferring to UTA. She had planned to graduate in May.

Robert Wayne Gilliam Sr., 66, Feb. 17 in North Richland Hills. Mr. Gilliam earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at Arlington State College (now UTA) in 1965. A Navy veteran, he worked at the U.S. Department of Defense plant representative office at Bell Helicopter. He served as electrical/avionics project engineer on all of Bell Helicopter's U.S. military programs from 1965 to 1995, when he retired.

James Edward Hall, 56, Dec. 17, 2003, in Dallas. Mr. Hall received his bachelor's degree from UTA in 1969. He was a pilot for Braniff Airlines and worked in financial services for 21 years.

Paul Whit Henderson, 77, Dec. 3, 2003, in Fort Worth. Mr. Henderson was a member of the first four-year graduating class at Arlington State College (now UTA) in 1961, earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He went on to earn a master's degree at Southern Methodist University and retired from Lockheed Martin after 30 years of service.

John Daniel Houlihan, 79, Dec. 15, 2003, in Fort Worth. Mr. Houlihan earned his associate's degree from North Texas Agricultural College (now UTA) in 1943. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He worked 36 years for Southwestern Bell and five years for AT&T.

Carol Golden Imes, 49, Aug. 10, 2003, in Oklahoma City. Dr. Imes received her bachelor's degree in biology from UTA in 1975. She earned her doctorate in ophthalmology from The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. She was an ophthalmologist in Oklahoma City.

Virginia Thompson Johnson, 81, Feb. 24 in Allen. Ms. Johnson received her associate's degree from North Texas Agricultural College (now UTA) in 1942. She worked as an engineer for almost 30 years at Texas Instruments, where she received the Outstanding Employee of the Year award two years in a row.

Jay Edwin Lackey, 63, Jan. 15 in Eastland County. Mr. Lackey earned his bachelor's degree in history from UTA in 1967. He was in the school publishing business for 34 years, retiring from Scholastic Publishing in 2001. A longtime resident of Irving, he received the city's Outstanding Citizen Award in 1992.

Magdaleno B. "Mac" Lara, 62, Dec. 30, 2003, in Arlington. Mr. Lara earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from UTA in 1972. He was vice president and co-owner of Utility Sales Agents of North Texas, formerly T.F. Sears. He was a member of Knights of Columbus and participated in many charitable activities.

Bart Lewis, 57, Feb. 29 in Dallas. Dr. Lewis was an associate professor and head of Spanish in the UTA Department of Modern Languages. He came to UTA in 2000 as a visiting professor and became an associate professor in 2001. He previously taught at Texas A&M, Sam Houston State, Cal State San Marcos and Lyon (Ark.) College. He received his bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University and his master's and Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico.

Joseph Robert Lewis, 93, Feb. 29 in Newville, Pa. Mr. Lewis earned his bachelor's degree in English from UTA in 1972 at age 61. He then received a master's degree from Texas Christian University. He served in the Army during World War II and retired as executive vice president at Gilbert Systems in Arlington before moving to Pennsylvania.

Lucy V. McRoberts, 89, Feb. 8 in Fort Worth. Ms. McRoberts earned her associate's degree from North Texas Agricultural College (now UTA) in 1936 and went on to earn her bachelor's and master's degrees at Texas Christian University. She was a teacher, counselor and vice principal at Fort Worth's Technical High School (now Trimble Tech), retiring in 1975.

Denes Monostory, 77, Jan. 13 in Arlington. Dr. Monostory was a professor emeritus in the UTA Department of Modern Languages. He joined the faculty at Arlington State College (now UTA) to teach German in 1958 and moved to Southwestern University in Georgetown two years later. In 1966, he returned to UTA, where he remained until his retirement in 1995. A native of Hungary, Dr. Monostory came to the United States following World War II and became a naturalized citizen through his service in the Army during the Korean War.

I. Edward "Ed" Nowlin, 80, April 18, 2003, in Tulsa, Okla. Mr. Nowlin received his associate's degree from North Texas Agricultural College (now UTA) in 1948. He earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University in 1951. He was an ordained elder and deacon in the Presbyterian Church.

Frank Earl Nute, 47, Feb. 17 in Grand Prairie. Mr. Nute received his bachelor's degree in management from UTA in 1978. At UTA, he was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha's Zeta Chi chapter. A longtime Arlington resident, he was a regional vice president for Primerica Financial Services in Arlington.

Stephanie Susan Perez, 36, Nov. 12, 2003, in Houston. Ms. Perez received her bachelor's degree in nursing from UTA in 1996. She was a registered nurse in pediatrics for The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Research Center in Houston. A Fort Worth native, she earned her associate's degree at Tarrant County College.

Rick Newman Perry, 45, Jan. 5 in Dallas. Mr. Perry received his B.B.A. from UTA in 1984. He co-owned and operated a water meter business in Wylie for the last 12 years. He was an avid bicycle rider and a member of the Plano Bicycle Association. Robert

Edward Peters, 57, Dec. 7, 2003,  in Des Plaines, Ill. Mr. Peters received his bachelor's degree in biochemistry from UTA in 1971. He graduated from Arlington Heights High School in Fort Worth in 1964.

Carol Anne Kirkpatrick Surratt Prindle, 46, Feb. 7 in Arlington. Ms. Prindle worked on her college education at night, eventually earning a bachelor's degree in accounting from UTA in 1995. She was an accountant for T.G.I. Friday's.

Adam Pritchard, 21, Feb. 21 in Arlington. Mr. Pritchard was a junior political science major at UTA. He graduated in 2001 from Longview High School, where he was on the swim team. He had planned to run for a seat on the Student Services Fee Advisory Committee.

Raul Rios, 77, Jan. 13 in Fort Worth. Mr. Rios last attended North Texas Agricultural College (now UTA) in 1948. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Southern Methodist University and worked as a mechanical draftsman on the B-52 at Consolidated Aircraft, which became Convair and later General Dynamics. He also worked for Chance Vought, which became LTV.

Margaret Kathleen "Kathy" Shields, 50, March 3 in Arlington. Ms. Shields received her bachelor's degree in art from UTA in 1974. A children's book illustrator, she previously worked at The Sketch Pad in Arlington and in the advertising department of Dillard's Department Stores.

Betty Breland Smith, 78, Feb. 8 in Corpus Christi. Ms. Smith received her associate's degree from North Texas Agricultural College (now UTA) in 1944. She lived in Dallas until 1986 when her husband, Lloyd, retired and they moved to Padre Island.

Mary Beth Steward, 82, Feb. 16 in Dallas. Ms. Steward was a former registrar at the UTA School of Nursing. She retired from UTA in 1978 after 30 years of service. A longtime resident of Fort Worth, she moved to Dallas in 2003.

Edna Christman Stovall, 98, Jan. 25 in Fort Worth. Ms. Stovall received her associate's degree from North Texas Agricultural College (now UTA) in 1942. She went on to earn a bachelor's degree at Texas Tech and a master's degree from Colorado State College. She taught for 40 years in public school systems in Colorado and Texas.

Zwingli Joe Thornton, 65, Feb. 23 in Fort Worth. Mr. Thornton received his bachelor's degree in English from Arlington State College (now UTA) in 1963. Called "Z. Joe" by his colleagues, he was a Star-Telegram political writer and investigative reporter from 1964-79 and later spent 11 years as public affairs director at what was then General Dynamics Corp.

Emma Jo Luke Tompkins, 81, Feb. 29 in Bedford. Ms. Tompkins graduated from North Texas Agricultural College (now UTA) in 1942. She worked for LTV, where she met her husband, Tommy. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2002.

Billye Louise Roberts Tracy, 79, Feb. 10 in Fort Worth. Ms. Tracy earned a bachelor's degree in English at UTA in 1981. For many years, she led an international Bible study group and traveled across the United States and Europe with her husband and church choir. During World War II, she sang with her sisters, Sybil and Novelle, in a trio called the Roberts Sisters Three. They performed for troops in hospitals and USOs and received a presidential citation. 

Eddie Anderson Warfield, 58, Feb. 26 in Dallas. Mr. Warfield earned his bachelor's degree in business administration from UTA in 1972. He worked at Southwest Products in Euless for 15 years and at Computalog for two years. He served in the Marines and was an expert sharpshooter.

Lon "L.M." York, 66, Jan. 26 in Grand Prairie. Mr. York earned his associate's degree from Arlington State College (now UTA) in 1958. He received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Southern Methodist University and completed his postgraduate work at UTA. He was a certified public accountant and in 1981 established a desktop publishing company that eventually encompassed western and midwestern regions of the United States and also Toronto. He served as controller and information technology director for PrintEDD in Grand Prairie for 21 years.
